American Idol Recap: It's down to the wire for the Top 16

Only a couple stand out in a surprisingly middle-of-the-road field. I think I had higher hopes at the beginning of this season than are currently bearing out. I'm trying to figure out why that is. Much of it is song choice. All these people picking songs that are too old for them or too big for them. Some of

it might actually be that, as Simon said last night, too many of them are sitting on a stool with a guitar and not really showing a lot of charisma. And some of it continues to be that with four judges talking, the singers actually do less singing. Maybe i just[...]

It's been a year....I miss him more today than I did then.

My thoughts today are about one of my dearest friends. Dave He died a year ago Today I still mourn his passing Celebrate his life. We met about 30 years ago when I was starting out in the business world. He took me under his wing. I knew nothing of the business world except what I learned in university. I walked into an office to be assistant something or another. In between re-writing employee handbooks and a weekly company newsletter my job was to keep our truck drivers breaking DOT hours of service rules and lot's of others too...and make certain we didn't get caught. The company had loads enough for fifty drivers and only drivers for a fraction of the loads. Good, reliable drivers were a scarcity back then it was my job to make certain the good ones stuck around and the bad ones, well, also my job to get rid of those. Dave was one of the goo...

Serenity & Luxury at Château de La Messardière in St Tropez’

Since the early 20th century, Saint Tropez on the French Mediterranean has been the muse of many poets, famous artists and movie directors. Although many yachts and world famous resorts lie in this town, it still maintains the character and charm of a fishing village, proud of its heritage and traditions. With over 300 days of sunshine and over 400 km of beach and shoreline, it’s no wonder many consider the French Riviera a paradise. There are so many activities throughout the year to experience in this area such as formula 1 racing, wine tasting festivals, regattas, and polo and golf tournaments. Sites such as Calanques de Cassis (coastal Fjords) and the Verdon Grand Canyon are less than 60 miles from this area and make for great day trips for those interested in the environment and exploring natural wonders unique to the area. Amid all the glamor and luxury, the hotel that seems to stand out is the 5-star Chateau de la Messardiere, located just a few minutes from the buzzing center of Saint-Tropez . This internationally renowned fairytale style hotel has modern décor but also has a Moorish flair. The hotel has flagstone walkways, mashrabiyas and lava bathrooms. It also boasts wrought iron railings, carved stone columns and original art mosaics which make this hotel elegant and unique. The panoramic views over the bay of St Tropez and beaches of Pampelonne are incredible and would be of interest to any photographer. All rooms have terraces and there is not a bad view in the hotel. The grounds are filled with every tree possible including eucalyptus, pine, palm, olive, cypress and box trees. All plants and trees on the grounds are treated and maintained with environmentally friendly techniques and products. There is an Olympic size solar heated mirror pool and an extensive well-being spa. There is something for everyone to be able to relax and take in the peaceful surroundings. There is even a free 24 hour shuttle to the nearest beach and to city center. An important part of the hotel’s motto and philosophy is that it strives to respect the environment. It has earned its green reputation thanks to an efficient management policy that the hotel has been putting into practice over many years. The hotel has an environmental charter, drawn up by the staff that has a list of concrete measures intended to promote continuous awareness and responsible environmental behavior of the hotel. The hotel is located on 25 acres of an official French Bird Protection League and Birdlife ornithological reserve. The hotel’s manager Gerald Hardy is committed to sustained development and states “it’s not enough to be green simply as a fashion statement” Château de La Messardière takes numerous measures to economize and preserve natural resources. If you have the choice, come here in May, June or September; without the crowd’s one can take the time to admire the charming little streets and alleys in St Tropez. Whether you are a local who is getting away from the hustle and bustle or a tourist who is seeking the vacation of a lifetime on the French Riviera, the Chateau de La Messardière is the place for you. Searching for Daylight Savings

by Claudine Zap Daylight Saving Time is coming, and with it, longer, more light-filled days are on the way. Some may be surprised that Daylight Saving Time is already here. But there's a reason for that. Below, your Buzz round up of searches on the time change. When is it? We spring ahead the second Sunday in March. This year it's Sunday, March 14. While the first day of spring isn't for another week, we've gotten a jump on the season since 2007. In fact, we now get four more weeks of longer days, since Daylight Saving now goes through the first Sunday of November. You're welcome. Not all states observe the time difference: Hawaii and most of Arizona opt out. Why do we have daylight saving time? The hope is that we save energy -- since there's less of a need to switch on the lights if natural light will do. Studies have shown the electricity conserved on the new schedule is actually pretty nominal. But look on the bright side. Literally. Those longer light-filled days are sure nice. Searches on the time switch have increased 100% in the last week. The sunlight-deprived would like to know "what is daylight saving time," "daylight saving time dates," and "origins of daylight saving time." What is the history of daylight saving time? Fun fact: The idea was first floated back in 1784 by one Benjamin Franklin. While minister of France he wrote the essay "An Economical Project for Diminishing the Cost of Light." The idea failed to, um, see the light of day until practically 100 years later, when the U.S. railroads instituted a standardized time for their train schedules. That time change was imposed nationally during the first World War to conserve energy, but was repealed after the war ended. It became the national time again during World War II. After that, it was a free-for-all of states deciding if they wanted it, and when it would start and end. Congress finally enacted the Uniform Time Act in 1966, which decreed that if a state chose to opt in to daylight saving, it had to be at the same time as everyone else. Why does it start at 2 a.m.? The website LiveScience explains that's it's pretty much the least disruptive time of day to make a switch. After all, most of us are asleep. Those who work on Sunday usually start later than 2 a.m. And fair warning for anyone planning on attending church services or brunch that day. While the shift is only one hour, according to UPI, sleep disorder specialists say you should prepare yourself: You actually can lose sleep over the time change. Experts suggest going to bed 15 minutes earlier a few days before. Our unscientific suggestion: Sleep in on Sunday. Follow us on Twitter

The Entrepreneurial Epistemology of Wikipedia

Source of book image: http://kellylowenstein.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/wikipedia-revolution1.jpg Wikipedia is a very unexpected and disruptive institution. Amateurs have produced an encyclopedia that is bigger, deeper, more up-to-date, and arguably of at least equal accuracy, with the best professional encyclopedias, such as Britannica. I learned a lot from Lih's book. For instance I did not know that the founders of Wikipedia were admirers of Ayn Rand. And I did not know that the Oxford English Dictionary was constructed mainly by volunteer amateurs. I also did not know anything about the information technology precursors and the back-history of the institutions that helped Wikipedia to work. I learned much about the background, values, and choices of Wikipedia entrepreneur "Jimbo" Wales. (Jimbo Wales seems not to be perfect, but on balance to be one of the 'good guys' in the world---one of those entrepreneurs who can be admired for something beyond their particular entrepreneurial innovation.) Lih's book also does a good job of sketching the problems and tensions within Wikipedia. I believe that Wikipedia is a key step in the development of faster and better institutions of knowledge generation and communication. I also believe that substantial further improvements can and will be made. Most importantly, I think that you can only go so far with volunteers--ways must be found to reward and compensate. In the meantime, much can be learned from Lih. In the next few weeks, I will be quoting a few passages that I found especially illuminating. Book discussed: Lih, Andrew. The Wikipedia Revolution: How a Bunch of Nobodies Created the World's Greatest Encyclopedia. New York: Hyperion, 2009.

"Weekly grocery bill of £420"?

Source: mymarilyn.blogspot.com --- Friday, March 12, 2010 The rising number of repossessions is the forgotten issue of the pre-election campaign. In a different world, this incredibly insightful piece of research by the housing and homelessness charity Shelter would be front news page. Referring to 1971 as a starting date, Shelter discovered that if food and other essential items had gone up as fast as the average property price, a box of washing powder would now cost £28-53, a jar of coffee over £20 and a pint of milk £2-43. Would you put up with that? Well, we certainly did with house prices. Unaffordable housing has been one of the most neglected issues of the pre-election campaign. Homes cost way more than they ever did in history and the paradox is that if prices don't keep ballooning, "financial experts" call it bad news. Yet, the impact of inflated property prices has proven devastating. There were 40,000 properties repossessed in 2008. Last year, the official number went up to 46,000 -an average of 126 repossessions a day. That's around 200,000 people going through a heartbreaking ordeal of not knowing where they're going to sleep the next day and where they're going to put their things. However, the figures don't even show the full picture. Like some analysts noted, anti-downturn measures such as the Mortgage Pre-action Protocol have merely deferred the inevitable, meaning that repossessions that weren't allowed to take place in 2009 will anyway within a year or so. More importantl ...

Taipei <3 — Hsinchu, Taiwan

Source: www.travelpod.com --- Friday, March 12, 2010 Jump to the full entry & travel map Hsinchu, Taiwan As I have been in Taiwan for almost three weeks, I sit down to write my second blog since being here. I can be honest and say I am not much of a blogger. I have tried to keep blogs before, but they will end up with three or four entries before I grow tired of writing. I have been keeping a journal, but that those words will not be written down in digital form. Sorry world. It's been a long two and a half weeks, but enjoyable nonetheless. I've had four trips to Taipei so far. Each one is more entertaining than the last. I spent my first week and a half in Taiwan living in dorm rooms. I was not able to start work until March 1 nor move into the dorms rooms until February 26. @CTLC was nice enough to let me sleep in their dorm rooms until I could move into the dorms. Hanny especially was nice enough to let me sleep in her bed. I went to Taipei my first weekend in Taiwan with an intern from Romania. Vas had been in Taiwan for five weeks and he already knew some Mandarin and his way around Taipei. I can say I will forever be grateful that my first time in Taipei, I had someone who knew there way around. It is so much easier your first time in a new place to have someone who can actually show you around. Well Saturday night, we explored Taipei a bit, saw Shihlin night market (night markets are extremely big around here and you get the best food at them), and Taipei 101. Even though I sti ...
