Love it or hate it? Moving in New York
The NYTimes currently has a great piece up on their website entitled, “The Psychology of Moving.” The piece, which details the moves/lack thereof of multiple people, paints the act of moving as one that is ultimately a treacherous and negative activity. While we can agree that yes, the process of moving itself (and by that, we mean physically packing up our things in boxes and bringing said boxes out to the moving truck, then unpacking them in our new home) is terrible. Our most recent move took place in the beginning of August. We dealt with the most incompetent of moving men; men who broke multiple pieces of furniture, took too long and yelled at us. To top it all off, on our moving day, mother nature decided to make it rain. So yes, we can understand that moving itself isn’t all that fun.
But here’s the thing – The Times article seems to put an emphasis, understandably, on the psychological reprecussions of moving. They seem to look at moving as a negative, not a positive, and that’s where we get tripped up. We’ve moved three times in New York in the past two years, and again, while every time, the process of packing and unpacking drained the life out of us, the actual though of moving is what got us up in the morning. It was exciting to think of finding a new home, of having more light, or more space, or a new corner store.
The Times speaks of moving as a fear-inducing event, writing “Panic can really set in around your home and your apartment,” said Ronnie Greenberg, a Manhattanpsychoanalyst. “It’s a matrix of safety, so moving is incredibly stressful and people don’t realize it — they mainly talk about the packing and the external part of moving.” We’d beg to differ. Sure, our home is a matrix of safety – but we find that the matrix of safety is defined by our belongings – the things that make any given apartment feel like home. The thought of moving, so long as we can bring our belongings with us (which of course, we always can, thanks to U-Haul or a few good moving men), is a thought that elicits excitement. So much excitement, actually, that even though we’re in our current lease for two years, we still browse the real estate listings every few days, just for fun.
