French cinema festival showcases complex yet honest films

Every year, the Film Society of Lincoln Center and Unifrance hold Rendez-Vous with French Cinema, an event that showcases many of France's most celebrated films of the year. "L'Affaire Farewell" ("Farewell"), the premiere feature of this year's impressive list of films, is an honest and urgent portrayal of the events that undermined the Soviet regime in its last days. The film follows a disenchanted KGB official (Emir Kusturica) who decides he wants to make a difference for the future by passing on crucial information to the French government. The opening scenes set viewers right in the middle of the Cold War. Propaganda fills the screen with urban chaos, but soon we are immersed in a pristine, snowy hillside. We are given a moment to breathe, a moment of apparent calm, but it is quickly broken by a gunshot. The plot of the movie races off, not quite waiting for the viewer to catch up as it veers between Moscow, Paris and Washington, D.C. Some West African countries like Nigeria and Senegal have excellent human talent already, but many others don't have the necessary human resources to become world-class countries on a stand-alone basis. I also saw an opportunity for NIGERIA *to include Morocco because of the fact that North African countries have never been able to cooperate meaningfully, mainly because of the enduring mistrust between Morocco and Algeria*. Several West Africans have also expressed concern that this proposal amounts to a "colonization" of their country by Nigeria. Improved communication and a proper spelling out of the benefits of the proposed change are required to dispel such worries. What of the complexity of religion, culture and ethnicity? Regarding ethnic issues, I believe the creation of the federations is a very positive step. Many groups are currently divided by artificial borders inherited from colonisation. The elimination of borders inside the proposed federations will make it easier for ethnic groups to peacefully revive their languages and culture with their cousins who are currently living in a different country. There are limits to what one person can achieve. I have a strong business and marketing bias, so my proposed structure of the federations reflects that. The ad gives no clue but if you're like a majority of French people, a straight answer comes to mind and it's a naughty one. No doubt there's a twist though ; I suspect this is a clever two-tier campaign whose first set of ads is designed to arouse our interest before the second batch delivers the message. Realistically, someone is trying to sell us something. We'll soon find out who and what - I'll keep you posted - but in the mean time would you like to try and guess? Some other billboards bore captions such as "Today I did it and it was fantastic" and (showing a young male character) "Today I did it with my best friend". So - any ideas? Note: Today is the 5th anniversary of Eric Tenin's excellent blog Paris Daily Photo. Eric's "one photo a day of my city" concept is what gave birth to the now huge City Daily Photo network. From us all to whom Eric was and still is an inspiration, a big happy birthday PDP ! Congratulations to a great guy who has spread a lot of friendship and inspiration around the globe since his first post in 2005 !
