FP Tech Desk: New PayPal app lets users transfer money with fist bump, Obama-style
PayPal wants to make the process of money changing hands as easy as bumping fists.
Now,
PayPal users who download the company's new Send Money iPhone application can
transfer money Obama-style simply by bumping their devices together.
As
smart phone users increasingly look to the devices they carry with them
to help manage their finances, PayPal is moving to expand its online
payment and money transfer services beyond the PC and onto iPhones,
BlackBerrys and other mobile devices.
PayPal's application is
by no means the first app that allows users to bump fists to transfer
information. Other applications, including one simply called "Bump"
developed by Bump Technologies Inc., allows users to exchange contact
information by touching two compatible devices.
PayPal's
new Send Money application also features Split Check and Collect Money
features. The Split Check function enables users to "divide and quickly
reimburse each other for the cost of a meal" for up to 20 people, while
the Collect Monday function helps people track for people who have
chipped in for something like a joint gift or the total cost of a
cottage rental.
PayPal says that mobile transactions through
its applications and mobile browsers have increased six-fold from about
US$25-million in 2008 to $141-million in 2009. The company also has
similar applications for Research In Motion Ltd.'s BlackBerry devices
and phones running Google Inc.'s Android software which allow users to
send money via their PayPal accounts.
"Today, you leave the
house with three critical things: your phone, your wallet and your
keys," said Osama Bedier, PayPal's vice president of platform and
emerging technology, in a statement.
"PayPal Send Money lets
consumers access their wallets through their phones. Because with
PayPal, the wallet lives in the cloud - the mobile phone is just one
device customers can use to access it."
Users can download the application via iTunes here.

OneTravel brings quick airline ticket purchases to your iPhone with "Wanderlust"
Filed under: Gadling Gear ReviewOnline travel agency OneTravel just released their very own iPhone app - Wonderlust.
The application brings easy air ticket reservations to your phone, allowing you to find fares from almost any airline in the world. Searching is simple - and if you regularly use the application, you can securely store your travel profile inside the program, making booking a ticket quick and easy.
During my review, I did run into a minor glitch - when entering an airport code, the app first matches the letters to countries. This means that AUS turns into a list of all the Australian airports. To actually find Austin, I had to scroll all the way to the bottom of the list.
Other than that, the program functioned perfectly - I had a list of all available fares in 10 seconds, and could book a ticket right away. The booking screen allows you to select the number (and type) of passengers, and even lets you pick a premium cabin. Some other apps require you to pay for their premium version to get access to first and business class travel.
Once you have booked a ticket, the app also acts as your booking manager, providing quick access to your itineraries.
Wanderlust is free of charge, and is available in the App store (iTunes link).

Five Tips for Staying In Step with Your Kids during the School Year
By David Wolf, Attorney
Published by Child Injury Lawyer Network
During the summer months it seems pretty easy to keep in tune with your children. Sports activities, family vacations, and days at the pool help create a strong family bond. But once they leave for that first day of school in the fall, it can be much harder to continue the same level of involvement in their lives. But it is worth it. Many studies have shown that parental involvement helps your kids learn more effectively.
Many schools and school groups, like the Parent Teacher Alliance (PTA), work hard to offer parents opportunities to become more involved in their children’s school experience. The following are five tips parents can use to keep involved with their child’s school and help improve their overall educational experience:
1. Ask lots of questions, and listen to the answers. Your child is discovering many new things every day at school. Put aside your grown-up worries for an hour or two and listen to what they have to say.
2.Keep in touch with the teacher. Knowing and keeping in touch with your child’s teacher is the most effective way to keep abreast of your child’s progress and to get a handle on any problems he or she might be having.
3. Join the PTA. The PTA is very involved with what happens at your child’s school. Talking to other parents and keeping abreast of what is going on help you be more involved.
4. Provide encouragement. Report cards only come out a few times a year, but every day is a new opportunity to encourage your child to do their best.
5. Don’t forget about after school activities. Sports teams, music and drama, the YMCA, Boys and Girls Club, and church activities all offer productive and enriching activities for kids after school lets out.

Start your own live internet radio station for free
I’m a wannabe radio star and I’ve already got a few podcasts under my belt. But for a long time I’ve been looking for a way to broadcast a live show over the internet. I lost patience trying to learn how to use Shoutcast and found uBroadcast to be too unstable. Last week I discovered Spreaker, an online application that lets you broadcast live radio for free. Within 10 minutes of signing up to the service I was on air, pumping out my favorite tunes and talking to the listeners. By sharing I managed to get about 50 live listeners too, who were impressed by the quality of the broadcast (if not, my presentation skills).
So, here’s a quick guide to how to start your own internet radio station using Spreaker:
1. Visit Spreaker.com and click on the Go on air now link then complete the sign-up process. You’ll receive an account verification email, with a link which you need to click to activate the account.
2. This is the page where all your past and current shows will be displayed. Click Create a new show to do just that.
3. Now you should enter the details of your radio show. Give it a title and enter a description for the show. Then select the language you’re broadcasting in and choose a category from the drop-down menus.
4. In the Create a new episode menu, click on the Live option. Note, there are also options for creating a podcast or uploading an existing podcast to be broadcast. Give the episode a title and select the date and time you want to go on air, then enter the duration of the show. Now click Open the Dee Jay Console to start the fun.
5. Spreaker comes with its own library of songs, loops, jingles and soundtracks, based on what the community has uploaded. You can browse the library using the Explore, Search and Latest tabs. Click Play to preview the audio and then hit Add to add the ones you like to your playlist.
6. You can also use your own songs and other audio, via the Upload tab. Again, make sure you hit the Add button to insert the tracks into your playlist.
7. Hit Close when you’ve added all your audio. You can go back to add more tracks and jingles during the broadcast if you need to. Spreaker also features a range of fun sound effects that you can play at any time during your broadcast. Add these to the Sound FX playlist using the Add button next to this window, which appears in the bottom-right of the interface.
8. Now you’re ready to start broadcasting. The main DJ console consists of three faders - one for the mic, and two for audio files, which you can drag in from the Playlist. You can use the Monitor buttons to isolate the audio on a particular track. Don’t forget about the sound effects, which can be played with a single click on the name. As soon as your time slot rolls around, the On Air button will light up and you’re off! Remember to share your broadcast with your Facebook friends using the option at the bottom of the screen. Your show will also be publically available from the Spreaker.com home page.

In Depth: Top 10 best iPhone apps to download today
The App store is jam packed with iPhone apps - we've previously covered our Top 10 best free iPhone apps, our pick of the 10 best free iPhone games on the planet and many more.
Our complete guide to the best iPhone apps links to all the best apps you can get your hands on.
But what if you just want to know the 10 apps that every iPhone user absolutely must own?
Then read on...
01. Tweetie £1.79 Our favourite Twitter client
We know that you might not be interested in a client for the microblogging service Twitter, but Tweetie is such an excellent example of how apps make the iPhone great that it takes our top spot nonetheless; Twitter was born for the iPhone.
Tweetie lacks only push notifications (though you could add that with an app such as Boxcar) to make it the ultimate Twitter app; it can geotag your tweets, let you view conversations, supports Lists, the new retweet feature and more.
Buy from the iTunes Store
02. Documents To Go £8.99 Word, Excel and PowerPoint editing
Documents to Go has the best word processor we've seen on iPhone, letting you create and edit Word docs while retaining formatting. It can work with Excel and PowerPoint documents, too, and the Premium edition lets you grab attachments from Gmail or Exchange servers.
Buy from the iTunes Store
03. The Guardian £2.39 Get your news on the go!
We're often asked why you'd spend money on an app that lets you do something that's free through Safari. This app is a good answer. Not only can you tailor the news that is delivered, but it's simple to use and you can cache stories to read offline when you're on the Tube.
Buy from the iTunes Store
04. TomTom UK & Ireland £59.99 Turn-by-turn directions
There are cheaper apps that add turn-by-turn navigation to the iPhone 3GS (the £26.99 CoPilot Live app will happily get you from A to B) but it should come as no surprise that the app from TomTom is by far the most polished. It lacks live traffic info, but we hope that's coming soon.
Buy from the iTunes Store
05. Facebook £FREE Social networking client
The great thing about this app is that it lets you keep in touch with friends and upload photos from the iPhone's camera straight to Facebook. It also offers push notifications too. Now as soon as a friend comments on your status, you'll know.
06. Reeder £1.79 The best RSS reader
This little app syncs with Google Reader, a service for reading RSS feeds from your favourite sites. Though the interface looks a little sparse, it's actually stuffed with features, and since there are lots of Google Reader clients for the Mac too, you can keep your feeds in sync.
Buy from the iTunes Store
07. Mobile Allowance £0.59 A super billing assistant
Whether your iPhone came from O2 or Orange, this is a fantastic app for keeping track of how much of your monthly allocation of minutes and texts you have used, plus any extra charges. We installed the free O2 one, but went back to Mobile Allowance as it's much cleaner.
Buy from the iTunes Store
08. Instapaper Pro £2.99 Offline reading
You know how you often come across articles on the web that you want to read, just not now? Ping them to the free Instapaper service, then use this app that caches for offline reading for you to read later. There's a free version too, though it lacks the tilt-to-scroll feature.
Buy from the iTunes Store
09. RedLaser £1.19 The ultimate price checker
This app uses the iPhone's camera to take pictures of barcodes, then looks for the product online to check prices. Amazon results are first, but it also supports Google Product Search to query a huge number of other online stores. Just don't let the staff in HMV catch you!
Buy from the iTunes Store
10. National Rail Enquiries £4.99 Rail journey planner
Sure, you can use Safari to muddle through the National Rail's website to find times, but, while it's expensive, this app is an essential investment for regular train-users. It helps plan journeys, optionally remembering your favourite stations and even favourite journeys, and shows the live progress of your train.
Our favourite feature: tap a button marked 'Next train home' and the iPhone will work out where you are, where your closest station is, and when the next train leaving for your home station departs.
