Chromewaves: Diamond Rings, First Rate People and The Darcys at Canadian Musicfest
Frank YangOkay, so for the more intrepid festival-goers Thursday night would have been Canadian Musicfest night TWO, not one. But I think that with the amount of standing around on sticky barroom floors I’ve got coming up, I should be given a bye for choosing to begin my CMF at the traditional Thursday starting line rather than the present-day realistic Wednesday one, though that starting line was located at The Garrison, some ways away from the traditional CMW stomping grounds.
The event was the eye weekly showcase, and the draw one act whom I’d been meaning to see for the better part of six months and another whom I’d only discovered a week or so ago, but was finding more than a little bit intriguing. These were First Rate People, an act who in this era of online over-sharing had managed to maintain an air of mystery about them, offering nothing in way of image and a few tantalizing song samples that reveled in a sample-heavy, retro-pop, soul revue aesthetic. Live, however, there were no such airs about them. The five-piece all looked barely old enough to be in the bar legally, and rather than belie their young age, their set and sound reveled in it. Not in any juvenile or amateurish sense – there was clearly a lot of talent up there as well as instrument swapping – but in their giddy, “school’s out!” spirit and refreshing disregard for things such as musical genre. Reminiscent at their best of Saturday Looks Good To Me with more hip-hop than power-pop in their blood, they’ve still not fully reconciled their beats-friendly inclinations with their traditional band roots and their best hooks are still coming from the samples and not them, but when – not if – they get it together, they’ll be a potent crew.

I had missed countless opportunities to see Diamond Rings live since he emerged as a Pitchfork darling last Summer, so with only the breezy videos to go by, I was expecting John O’Regan’s glammy alter-ego to be a tongue-in-cheek bit of synth-poppery. And while the unicorn tapestry hanging off the front of his synth was a bit of fun, the performance was decidedly darker and more dramatic than any of that – the light-hearted “All Yr Songs” was an anomaly amongst the songs that will likely make up the full-length debut Special Affections, due out later this year, and second single “Wait & See” takes on an entirely different character when heard without the visuals. Also helping the intensity of the performance was O’Regan picking up the guitar for more than a few numbers and injecting some welcome D’Urbervilles-ish skronk. An impressive set, and it was good to see that the Bowie comparisons that get used in describing Diamond Rings go much further than just the Aladdin Sane-ish makeup; the style is obvious, but there’s plenty of substance as well.

I then took leave of The Garrison and hoofed (then streetcar-ed) it to the El Mocambo for the Audio Blood showcase, which had the good luck of a) featuring a band I wanted to see at the precise time I would be able to get there and b) being en route to my apartment. I had seen The Darcys at NXNE last year, but since that show they’d undergone some pretty fundamental lineup changes with the departure of frontman Kirby Best and they’ve since recorded a new record under the production auspices of The Dears’ Murray Lightburn. And while the positive-and-not-derivative Radiohead comparisons I made in June still hold, new singer Jason Couse’s voice does have a greater Yorke-ian influence than his predecessor; a fact that could be troubling if its used in the wrong (read: obvious) way. Musically, they still have superb arrangements and songcraft built on a bed of white noise and white knuckles, but they could stand to sublimate the angst in their delivery a bit. I suggest rolling it up into a little ball and swallowing it deep, down inside. That’s what I do.

Your Voice Can Make A Difference!
By Rob McIlvaine
FMWRC Public Affairs
The U.S. Army recently sent out the 2010 Survey of Army Families VI to a random selection of civilian Active Army spouses in order to assess the support provided to Families and Soldiers during these past nine years of persistent conflict.
“This survey is your chance to tell the Army leadership what it’s like during this difficult period with so many of our Soldiers deployed,” Lt. Gen. Rick Lynch, IMCOM commander told 75,000 civilian spouses of Active Soldiers in a letter introducing the 2010 Survey of Army Families VI.
Because this number represents just a small portion of the total number of spouses, it’s extremely important to complete the survey, according to survey officials. Every four years, this valuable information gives the Army a grassroots view of how Family’s opinions and attitudes have changed, and provides an opportunity to evaluate the effects of programs on Families.
The survey also tracks trends regarding the characteristics of Army Families, identifies new and emerging Family issues, and supplements other studies on Army Families.
“Your voice is extremely important. As a spouse randomly selected to participate in this survey, you will be not only be speaking for yourself, you’ll be representing many other Army spouses,” Joseph Rayzor, FMWRC director of Marketing, said.
Army leadership will use the survey results to plan, formulate, and improve policies and programs which benefit Army Families. For example, results from previous surveys of Army Families have helped the Army design Family Readiness Groups and improve Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation programs.
This year’s focus is the impact deployments have on Army Families.
“Multiple deployments during this time of persistent conflict may have changed the needs of our Soldiers and their Family members. We must hear from our customers in order to make the best informed decisions for the Army, our Soldiers and their Families,” Rayzor said.
The Survey of Army Families was institutionalized to meet DoD’s requirement for military departments to perform Family research and program evaluation, and an Army requirement (through a 1983 CSA White Paper) to conduct research on the role of Army Families and the effect of Army life on Families.
After receiving the letter about participation in the 2010 Survey of Army Families VI, spouses may complete the survey on the Internet or using a hard-copy version provided by mail.
To keep the survey as scientifically accurate as possible, only those selected during the random sampling will be able to participate in the survey.
Spouses not selected for the survey that wish to provide comments, suggestions or critiques of support programming are encouraged to use their spouse’s chain of command, participate in the AFAP process, or speak to their local Family Support Group or Army Community Service directors to learn how to direct their comments to the appropriate agency.

R&R ~ very yummy ~ HDMac's Paul Buyan's Split Pea Soup ~ Review #2
Totally awesome is all I can say !~ Linda/cllw did a review on this one a while back. Immediately I knew it was a must make ~ Even the hot weather wasn't going to stop me ~ But I got lucky and last week we experienced some foul weather ~ Yes it happens even in paradise ~
I jumped right on it ~ I had purchased the peas earlier just waiting for the right time. Finally, Its showtime as the little bag of peas has been quietly waiting in the deep, dark closet hidden among strangers. Just quietly waiting for their turn to visit the Pot ~
From the very beginning this recipe starts out great ~ The smell of the sauting veggies, really sends out the message of better things to come ~ I really took my time with this process, one that I always do ~ Time after time I have heard Chefs say ~ Take you time, don't rush them slowly saute the veggies ~ Remember you are simply sauteing not frying ~ Low and slow ` That is always my motto when I make stocks and soups ~ The colors turn out very nice and a lovely natural sweetness is your reward ~
Just perfect amounts of everthing allowing subtitle flavors to come through. Mine simmered quite sometime as I did not soak the peas first ~ I had no Ham hock so I used some bacon. I switched one fat for another ~ The butter for a little bacon grease ` ~ That really highlight the peas ` not a lot just a few strips ~
Honestly I got fed up waiting for the peas to cook, because by now the smell was killing me ~ so I processed 1/2. Now what a great thing that turned out to be~ A natural thickner ~ and yet some texture was left to the remaining soup ~ Its dense and extremely tasty ~ Nice color. A real tummy pleaser. Fairly hardy, But maily its the taste ~ Marcia Its a Great Recipe ~ Gosh Paul ate well ~ Janie ~ Thanks so much for sharing the recipe with us ~ How good it was ~
Paul Bunyans Split Pea Soup ( Winning Recipes from Minnesota with Love )
Ingredients
1 pound of dried split peas
1/2 cup each, celery, carrot and onion. ( used slightly more of each as these ingredients are so important to all soup bases)
1 clove of garlic minced
2 Tbs butter or margarine ( used some bacon fat ~ )
1-2 Smoked hm hocks , about a 1/2 pound each ( used several slices of chopped bacon)
1/4 tsp pepper, 1/2 tsp salt ( sea salt)
* I used 3 cans of chicken stock and 1 cup of white wine and 1 cup of water instead of all water
( This made for a very rich and delicious broth )
Cover the peas with water and soak overnight. Saute the celery, carrot , onion and garlic in the butter. Drain the peas and reserve the liquid. Add enough of the soaking liquid to equal 10 cups. Put in a pot and add the rest of the ingredients. ( I added the liquids to the pan that I sauted the veggies in ~ too much good stuff on the bottom to leave behind)
Heat to boiling, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and simmer for 3 hours. Remove the meat and return the meat to the pot. Serves 8
* I simmerd the soup covered for about 4 hours, uncovered then simmered for another 1-1/2 hours. The liquid reduced and the soup got slightly thicker. After processing 1/2 of it that thickened it up even more.

"Make Way for Victory"
Make Way for Victory
Today's Scripture:
"But thanks be to God, Who gives us the victory [making us conquerors] through our Lord Jesus Christ
(I Corinthians 15:57, AMP) .
Today's Word by Joel and Victoria
God desires that you live in victory in every area of your life. The scripture says He always causes us to triumph through Christ Jesus! No matter what you may be facing today, God wants to make you more than a conqueror. Are you battling sickness? God wants to give you healing. Are you struggling with a broken relationship? God wants to give you restoration and peace. Are you facing a need—physically, spiritually, or emotionally? God wants to give you provision and supply all your needs according to His riches in glory.
Notice this verse starts out by saying, "Thanks be to God." In the Bible, when God's people were going into battle, many times they sent the worshipers out in front of the warriors. When you choose to be thankful and bless the Lord in the midst of your ...
