New article: Make Mafia Wars an offer it can't refuse
By David Gewirtz
Forgive me. I am about to commit a sin against mankind. It's a tough choice we make in journalism sometimes. Do we do what we know is right? Or do we crank out yet another piece of content on deadline and to heck with whom it hurts?
Do we stand up for our own values? Or do we sell our value system down the river, merely because we have a few paragraphs due by midnight?
"There are 25 million doomed souls playing this horrid little piece of trash."
I am going over to the dark side. Now, to be fair, it's to help a particularly misguided reader. But it's still wrong. I will lose sleep over this decision. And I will feel shame.
I'm about to tell Carleen Corleone (not her real last name, but surprisingly close) how to turn Mafia Wars back on.
Tap here to join in the shame.

Re: New Video - It's Been Awhile
Posted by DudeBowl:
I went in today to work on a new spare system. I wasn't planning on taking a video (haven't taken one in about 6 months; last video taken ), but decided to get a shot on video to take stock of things. It was from behind, and I couldn't get a side shot to go along with it because that lane was in use. I can try and get more later.
Someone will probably ask what I'm doing with the ball in my backswing. I can't really say, except that I was struggling big-time with my release and one day I tried it because I thought it felt natural. I do far better with it than without it. I don't really know what it does for me (or TO me?).
If anyone has any comments about any of it, please leave them. Hopefully it's at least something I can continue to build on.

Re: What Defines Stroker, Tweener & Cranker

When PDW was a young buck on the PBA tour he was considered a cranker, just like Holman and Roth were crankers.
Truth be told, it doesn't really matter what you call it. I am with CG on this one they are antiquated terms that are no longer useful or applicable. They are different things to different people.

In Depth: Top 10 best iPhone apps to download today
The App store is jam packed with iPhone apps - we've previously covered our Top 10 best free iPhone apps, our pick of the 10 best free iPhone games on the planet and many more.
Our complete guide to the best iPhone apps links to all the best apps you can get your hands on.
But what if you just want to know the 10 apps that every iPhone user absolutely must own?
Then read on...
01. Tweetie £1.79 Our favourite Twitter client
We know that you might not be interested in a client for the microblogging service Twitter, but Tweetie is such an excellent example of how apps make the iPhone great that it takes our top spot nonetheless; Twitter was born for the iPhone.
Tweetie lacks only push notifications (though you could add that with an app such as Boxcar) to make it the ultimate Twitter app; it can geotag your tweets, let you view conversations, supports Lists, the new retweet feature and more.
Buy from the iTunes Store
02. Documents To Go £8.99 Word, Excel and PowerPoint editing
Documents to Go has the best word processor we've seen on iPhone, letting you create and edit Word docs while retaining formatting. It can work with Excel and PowerPoint documents, too, and the Premium edition lets you grab attachments from Gmail or Exchange servers.
Buy from the iTunes Store
03. The Guardian £2.39 Get your news on the go!
We're often asked why you'd spend money on an app that lets you do something that's free through Safari. This app is a good answer. Not only can you tailor the news that is delivered, but it's simple to use and you can cache stories to read offline when you're on the Tube.
Buy from the iTunes Store
04. TomTom UK & Ireland £59.99 Turn-by-turn directions
There are cheaper apps that add turn-by-turn navigation to the iPhone 3GS (the £26.99 CoPilot Live app will happily get you from A to B) but it should come as no surprise that the app from TomTom is by far the most polished. It lacks live traffic info, but we hope that's coming soon.
Buy from the iTunes Store
05. Facebook £FREE Social networking client
The great thing about this app is that it lets you keep in touch with friends and upload photos from the iPhone's camera straight to Facebook. It also offers push notifications too. Now as soon as a friend comments on your status, you'll know.
06. Reeder £1.79 The best RSS reader
This little app syncs with Google Reader, a service for reading RSS feeds from your favourite sites. Though the interface looks a little sparse, it's actually stuffed with features, and since there are lots of Google Reader clients for the Mac too, you can keep your feeds in sync.
Buy from the iTunes Store
07. Mobile Allowance £0.59 A super billing assistant
Whether your iPhone came from O2 or Orange, this is a fantastic app for keeping track of how much of your monthly allocation of minutes and texts you have used, plus any extra charges. We installed the free O2 one, but went back to Mobile Allowance as it's much cleaner.
Buy from the iTunes Store
08. Instapaper Pro £2.99 Offline reading
You know how you often come across articles on the web that you want to read, just not now? Ping them to the free Instapaper service, then use this app that caches for offline reading for you to read later. There's a free version too, though it lacks the tilt-to-scroll feature.
Buy from the iTunes Store
09. RedLaser £1.19 The ultimate price checker
This app uses the iPhone's camera to take pictures of barcodes, then looks for the product online to check prices. Amazon results are first, but it also supports Google Product Search to query a huge number of other online stores. Just don't let the staff in HMV catch you!
Buy from the iTunes Store
10. National Rail Enquiries £4.99 Rail journey planner
Sure, you can use Safari to muddle through the National Rail's website to find times, but, while it's expensive, this app is an essential investment for regular train-users. It helps plan journeys, optionally remembering your favourite stations and even favourite journeys, and shows the live progress of your train.
Our favourite feature: tap a button marked 'Next train home' and the iPhone will work out where you are, where your closest station is, and when the next train leaving for your home station departs.

Good Language Choice For School Programming Test?
An anonymous reader writes "The Australian Informatics Olympiad programming test is being run in a couple of months. I'm an experienced programmer and I'm thinking of volunteering to tutor interested kids at my children's school to get them ready. There will be children of all levels in the group, from those that can't write 'hello world' in any language, to somewhat experienced programmers. For those starting from scratch, I'm wondering what language to teach them to code in. Accepted languages are C, C++, Pascal, Java, PHP, Python and Visual Basic. I'm leaning towards Python, because it is a powerful language with a simple syntax. However, the test has a run-time CPU seconds limit, so using an interpreted language like Python could put the students at a disadvantage compared to using C. Is it better to teach them something in 2 months that they're likely to be able to code in but possibly run foul of the CPU time limit, or struggle to teach them to code in a more complicated syntax like C/C++ which would however give them the best chance of having a fast solution?"

Free-agent trades in the NFL: A history lesson
This is the start of a research process, not the end of it. With Seattle's interest in Brandon Marshall, I thought it's worth exploring previous examples of trades involving restricted free agents, a category that technically would include players affixed with the non-exclusive franchise tag.
It's worth noting that in 1998 and 2000 there were two instances in which a player with the franchise tag was traded for multiple first-round picks. It hasn't happened since, showing a change in the market. Teams haven't been willing to give up multiple first-round picks for the right to pay anothe teams player a big fat contract.
Now, as stated earlier, this is the start of the research project, not the end of it. I will continue compiling examples, but wanted to give you a chance to get involved, too. If you can think of examples of a restricted free agent traded, please submit it in the comments section, and if this sounds a little bit like Tom Sawyer talking about how fun it is to paint the fence in hopes of recruiting help, well, there's probably parallel.
This is for players who are restricted free agents, players who've either been tendered a qualifying offer or slapped with the franchise tag entitling their former team to compensation should they sign elsewhere. In that regard, receivers like Deion Branch and Anquan Boldin -- acquired with a trade for draft picks -- are not included because they were under contract at the time of the deal.
April 19, 1997: Quarterback Heath Shuler voided the final five years of his contract, but Washington extended a qualifying offer that put the team in line to receive a first-round and a third-round pick to the team that signed him. Washington wound up settling for a fifth-round choice in 1997 and a third-round choice in 1998 from New Orleans, which acquired Shuler.
-- Thanks to Mike Sando of ESPN.com, who submitted this example.
April 21, 1998: Defensive tackle Sean Gilbert, Washington's franchise player, was traded to Carolina for Panthers' first-round pick in 1999 (No. 5 overall) and a first-round choice in 2000 that turned out to be No. 12.
Feb. 12, 2000: Wide receiver Joey Galloway, tagged as a franchise player for the second consecutive year, was traded from Seattle to Dallas for Cowboys' first-round pick (No. 19 overall) in 2000 and a first-round choice in 2001.
April 6, 2005: The Chiefs traded a fifth-round pick for DE Carlos Hall, who was a restricted free agent and certainly not a franchise-tagged player. Hall played only one season with Kansas City.
-- Thanks to Mike Sando of ESPN.com, who submitted the example.
March 21, 2006: The Atlanta Falcons acquired Jonathan Abraham, the New York Jets' franchise player, giving the Jets the No. 29 overall pick in the 2006 draft.
March 11, 2006: Brandon Lloyd was given a first-round tender by San Francisco, meaning the 49ers were in line to receive a first-round choice should he sign an offer sheet elsewhere the 49ers chose not to match. Washington traded its third-round pick in 2006 and fourth-round pick in 2007 to San Francisco in exchange for Lloyd, a restricted free agent, who then received a $10 million signing bonus from Washington. He was cut two years later.
-- Thanks to Mike Sando of ESPN.com for submitting the example
March 5, 2007: The New England Patriots traded their second-round pick (No. 60 overall) and a seventh-round pick to the Dolphins for receiver Wes Walker, a restricted free agent originally chosen in the second round.
-- Thanks to reader Tom Page who submitted the example
March 17, 2008: Center Chris Myers was acquired by Houston for a sixth-round pick, the same round the Broncos originally selected him in back in 2005.
-- Thanks to Mike Sando of ESPN.com, who cited the example
April 22, 2008: The Vikings acquired defensive end Jared Allen from Kansas City, trading the Chiefs a first-round choice (No. 17 overall) and two third-round choices (No. 73 and No. 82) in exchange for Allen, who was designated franchise player.
Feb. 28, 2009: New England traded quarterback Matt Cassel, who had received the franchise tag, and linebacker Mike Vrabel for the Chiefs' second-round pick, No. 34 overall.
April 17, 2009: Offensive tackle Jason Peters traded from Buffalo to Philadelphia in exchange for the Eagles' first-round pick (No. 28 overall) and fourth-round pick (No. 121) in 2009 and a sixth-round choice in 2010.
