Corey Haim, Dead at 38
Corey Haim was 38. He was the Toronto actor who starred in such films as "Lucas", "The Lost Boys" and "License to Drive". Locals will remember him as Larry on "The Edison Twins" before he shot to fame in the mid-to-late 80s.
Growing up in this city, it seemed like everyone had a Corey Haim connection. Every one of us was
two degrees of separation from him or closer, and we all heard the stories. Here's a little something I wrote about Corey Haim back in 2006.
To Corey's friends and family in this city, I'm deeply sorry for your loss. I always liked the guy and rooted for him to slay his demons.

Google's New Android Advocate Comes Out Swinging
Sun Microsystems' loss was Google's gain on Monday, as former Sun guru Tim Bray announced that he's joined Google's Android push in the role of Developer Advocate. "Google and I have been a plausible match for a long time," Bray wrote in a blog post announcing the decision. "Web-centric, check. Search, check. Open-source, check. The list goes on."

Thyroid Patients Getting in the Flow Over Elissa Stein's New Book
It's no surprise that thyroid patients frequently have menstruation on the mind. That's because thyroid problems can cause all sorts of menstrual irregularities -- heavy periods, more frequent periods, absence of periods, and so on.
That's why I wrote about the book Flow back in November of last year when it was first released.
This past week, Flow co-authors Elissa Stein and Susan Kim were featured on ABC's "The View," talking about the book Flow: the Cultural Story of Menstruation. You can watch the segment online here.
I'm not sure how long the "View" episode will be online, so check it out. For more information, see the Flow website, or compare online prices for Flow at Pricegrabber.

David Fincher Attached To Two New Projects
Acclaimed film director David Fincher is attached to two major films - Columbia's Pawn Sacrifice and Sony's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.
The original Danish production of Stieg Larsson's crime thriller, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, has only just been launched in the UK. While it has been critically lauded, we can nonetheless expect an impressive adaptation from Fincher as he is known for dark and stylish thrillers such as Se7en and Fight Club.
While no final decision has been made, Sony and producer Scott Rudin are thought to be interested in the curent hot ticket Carey Mulligan to play the role of a victimised young hacker and detective. Debutant Steve Zaillian will write the screenplay.
Fincher's other project Pawn Sacrifice - a film on the life of the legendary American chess player Bobby Fischer, leading up to his historic and politically sharged world championship win against Boris Spassky in 1972.
Tobey Maguire is producing and eagerly eyeing Fischer's role. Steven Knight wrote the script.

New US Broadband internet policy to be announced
By SouthernFriedInfidel
Staff Writer
Heard this on NPR on the drive to work. The FCC is working to plan out the way forward on Internet access.
The goal apparently is to get the US less far behind the rest of the world on broadband speeds. The average American gets something like 5 mbps from their broadband connection. The average European: 15-20.
Here's a quote from the story that got me wondering:
Blair Levin, executive director of the FCC's broadband initiative wrote:Other countries tend to have broadband dominated by a single telecom carrier: the phone company. The U.S. is very different. The majority of broadband subscribers [there] actually subscribe through cable. So it's not always an apples-to-apples comparison.
Excuse me?! Europeans get their mega-fast net access through THE PHONES?
Someone notify Time-Warner that their recent ads are BS!

Ticket-Crazed Virginia Hands Out 6,996 in One Weekend
(Newser)
–
In the olden days, cops handed out traffic tickets to keep us safe; in our brave, new, cash-strapped world, states and municipalities are pushing police to hand out as many as possible—for the money they bring in. Just look at Virginia, where last weekend police wrote 6,996 tickets in a federally funded effort to line the state’s coffers called “Operation Air, Land, and Speed.” And the fines aren't paltry: Get caught going, say, 60 in a 45 mph zone in the Old Dominion State and you could pay a whopping $2,500.
“They’re trying to use police officers to balance the budget on the backs of drivers and it’s too bad,” a Michigan lawman tells the Business Insider. “We might as well just go door to door and tell people, ‘Slide us $100.’” Even if cops rebel, governments can still bring in the dough the automatic way. Revenue from red-light cameras in LA went from $200,000 to $400,000 a month between 2007 and 2009.

Homeowners with Chinese drywall deserve money, Florida official tells FEMA
Florida's interim emergency management director sent a letter late Wednesday to federal disaster officials, asking that they “identify and distribute” financial aid to families affected by Chinese drywall.
“Any disaster funding that could be provided to these individuals would help relieve the significant burdens they are experiencing,” David Halstead wrote to the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Halstead did not identify a dollar amount, nor did he say how the homeowners might use the money.
In the letter, Halstead said he was writing at the behest of Gov. Charlie Crist, who also is a candidate for the U.S. Senate. In addition to requesting money for homeowners, Halstead asked FEMA to conduct a preliminary damage assessment in Florida.
