by Andrew Frisicano Everybody Was In The French Resistance....Now, the project of Art Brut's Eddie Argos and Dyan Valdés from The Blood Arm, put out Fixing the Charts, Volume One, a collection of 12 poppy, parodic songs on Cooking Vinyl earlier this year. "Argos employs much irony and humour in his songs but there's often a kernel of truth at the heart of the situation he portrays. Although the track which uses the band name as a hook ('Creeque Allies') takes an 'Allo 'Allo approach to history ("the Nazi occupation/ was an awkward situation"), the lyrics also work as a tribute of sorts to the French resistance, while 'G.I.R.L.F.R.E.N (You Know I've Got a)') is a funny but biting response to Avril Lavigne's concept of sisterhood." [SoundsXP] Videos of some of those ditties live are posted below. No US tour dates yet, but they'll play five shows at SXSW this year, and then UPDATE: do a proper tour of the US in May. On the afternoon of Thursday, March 18th, they play the BrooklynVegan/AnSo day party at Spider House. Skip It THE FILM The mild delights of 2007's "Music & Lyrics" notwithstanding, it's always cause for alarm when writer/director Marc Lawrence and actor Hugh Grant find the time in their busy schedules to make movies with each other. "Did You Hear About the Morgans?" is their third collaboration (a trilogy that includes the sour 2002 film, "Two Weeks Notice"), and holds the distinction of being not only their most disastrous duet, but also one of the worst films of the 2009 film year. I'm not exactly sure why the well is poisoned every time these fellows get near each other, but "Morgans" is a fantastic reminder to institute some sort of restraining order. Engineer sues Illinois Central over repetitive injuries

A man has filed suit against his employer, alleging he sustained elbow and wrist injuries after his repetitive work for the company. Jeffrey Garner claims he began working for Illinois Central Railroad Company as an engineer in December 1995. While working for the railroad, Garner experienced long-term cumulative trauma that caused him to develop permanent injuries to his wrists and elbows, according to the complaint filed Feb. 24 in St. Clair County Circuit Court. In addition to his injuries, Garner suffered pain and mental anguish, lost earnings and incurred medical costs because of his work, the suit states. Illinois Central Railroad Company negligently failed to provide Garner with a safe place to work and with safe tools and equipment, failed to provide him with safe methods to perform his work, failed to provide him with proper supervision and failed to warn him about the development of cumulative traumas leading to injury, the complaint says. In addition, Garner blames the railroad for failing to provide sufficient manpower for tasks it wanted performed. Garner is seeking a judgment of more than $50,000, plus costs. He will be represented by Paul T. Slocomb and David L. Blunt of Blunt Slocomb in St. Louis. St. Clair County Circuit Court case number: 10-L-86.

For Current Fashion, JC Penney Wants to be Your Retailer

Who are you wearing? It’s a common question on the red carpet (as well as occasionally among us ordinary folk) and the answer is often some high fashion designer. But JC Penney (yup, JC Penney) is aiming to change that. The mid-level retailer, which has a store at 901 Avenue of the Americas in Manhattan; (212 295-6120), recently held a fashion show at New York’s Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center. (Bet you never thought you'd read the words “Fashion show” "JC Penney” and Alice Tully Hall” in the same sentence…) The store has teamed up with some big-name designers in order to offer designer fashion at affordable prices--and in the process, change their image from a store more aligned with Kmart than Bloomingdales in many people’s minds. Current hot designers include Charlotte Ronson, Nicole Miller (who has dressed such celebrities as Halle Berry and Felicity Huffman) and Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, who already have two successful clothing lines elsewhere. (They attended the JC Penney Discover Spring Style Event at Alice Tully Hall last week.) Uber model Cindy Crawford, who also attended the show, has a line of furniture for the store, and is developing a jewelry line as well--and she swears that she mixes clothing from stores like JC Penney with investment pieces, and has been doing so since she was a teen.
