CakeWalk: Beannachtaí na Féile Pádraig oraibh!

Photo courtesy of MarthaStewart.com CakeWalk is a weekly column by Mary Ann Porch dedicated to every baker who has ever struggled to achieve the right consistency with their icing, unsuccessfully searched for the perfect cupcake topper or just wants to learn something new. Because with a few helpful tips, cupcakes are a cakewalk. I took Spanish in college, and for everyone else that didn't have a Gaelic program at their high school or university, the title of this blog post is "St. Patrick's Day blessing Upon you!" If that first paragraph wasn't hint enough or you've been spared the cheesy grocery store decorations this year, this upcoming Tuesday marks St. Patrick's Day. If you're like me, the tradition of green beer and miles upon miles of amateur drinkers is less than appealing. As a result, I choose to focus my celebration more on the culture of Ireland, especially their recipes. Obviously, vanilla cake tinted with green food coloring is not an ancient Gaelic tradition. But who would be brave enough to step forward and claim that Irish soda bread would make for a fine substitute when it comes to the lower portion of a cupcake? No one, that's who. Luckily for us, their are plenty of "Irish" ingredients (I'm using the term "Irish" loosely) that can be utilized to make some pretty unique and delicious cupcakes. After scouring the Internet, the vast majority of recipes are simply the aforementioned green cupcakes or a take on the Irish Car Bomb in cupcake form. Below are my two favorites, ranging from easy somewhat advanced: Lucky Charms® Cupcakes - The folks over at Betty Crocker have come up with this recipe that was most likely being made my Middle America Moms long before the Crocker Test Kitchen put it online. I know this because I was born and raised in Middle America by a mother that was born and raised in Middle America, and as result, we ate like Middle Americans. That being said, I've never taken an Irish history course, but I'm pretty certain General Mills isn't 100 percent on par with Lucky Charms being an Irish cereal, but it's pretty damn delicious so just go with me here and trust the fact that your friends and kids will get a big kick out of the cupcake containing all of the good luck charms they're sure to need for the rest of 2010. Photo courtesy of BettyCrocker.com Chocolate, Whiskey and Beer Cupcakes - If you're not one to over indulge in the liquid celebrations associated with St. Patrick's Day, The Smitten Kitchen offers a wonderful alternative with her Chocolate, Whiskey and Beer Cupcakes. Although I love the recipe, I'm not too keen on the icing design and would suggest a more sophisticated icing technique and decoration. Martha Stewart offers a wonderfully simple idea that involves arranging a simple but elegant shamrock on top. Photo courtesy of TheSmittenKitchen.com I hope St. Patrick's Day is as fruitful for you as it was for St. Patrick and the day he drove all the snakes out of Ireland. On that note, why not share some of that good luck along with your favorite St. Patrick's Day cupcake recipes in the comments section? FLEX On jQuery: Extending The jQuery Event Object

Last week in my FLEX On jQuery series with Joe Rinehart , I explored the idea of creating non-coupled UI elements that communicate indirectly through the use of event listeners and modifiable event behaviors . In that experiment, I used the core jQuery Event object with custom event types to model custom events; but, I ... Read More »

Harry Reid is a conservative. Who knew?

According to my friend and fellow columnist Eugene Paslov, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., is “a quintessential Nevada conservative.” That's like calling Rush Limbaugh a “progressive.” Quintessential is a big word so I looked it up in the dictionary: “The essence of a thing in its most concentrated form,” which doesn't transform Reid into a conservative. In fact, our senior senator has moved steadily to the left since he first went to Washington more than 20 years ago. I agreed with my friend Gene Paslov when he wrote that “Sen. Reid is in the best position to negotiate with...

Georges Bataille (Union Square)

This is a little late, but it's still worth a shot. You came into the Strand on Wednesday night looking for the letters of Georges Bataille. Your friend and I had a conversation about the wonderful writer first then he must have talked to you about it because your opening line to me was that your friend said I was, "Something of an expert". I was completely unaware of this book of letters, and will be keeping an eye out for it. Thanks for the heads up. You were quite cute. Lets get a drink and talk more about Bataille.

What do I even do (prt 1)

I'm in the worst place of my life, I am on confused I Honestly don't know what to do. I recently broke up with my girlfriend, but I still love her. She isn't who fell in love with anymore though. We had been dating for months 11 to be exact and I Had been in many relationships before, nothing felt like this, id never known this feeling, I knew she was the perfect girl (for me) . About 4-5 months ago she went to this new school, and we got restrained from seeing each other as often. But we loved each other and wanted to keep going , it was worth it to be together. Well as time went on she continued to change and It was starting to become very noticeable. She starting being very different very cold very distant and we hit some rough patches. We started fighting all the time and she really started to be someone else, and we continued to fight. Eventually everything smoothed out and she said she was going to be the girl I fell in love with (this was 3 months ago…) she never did. She became more like the girls I try to avoid, the ones I stay away from, she lost that look she had in her eye when she looked at me and it seemed she put me last, everything came first. Then she started really acting different always mean, always resentful, she just wasn’t her anymore. She changed the way she acted, dressed, talked, went about everyday life, anything you could possibly change she did, she was very mature she even became more immature. She started acting out and just being down straight different towards me, and it got to the point in which everyday I would break up with her, because she just wasn’t the girl I fell in love with at all. She would only call me and care until she convinced me to get back with her, a now everyday thing but it wasn’t hard, because deep down I love who she once was, and theirs always a sparkle of her but then she goes away again. It got to the point in which I couldn’t take it anymore, and I broke it off. I'm going crazy inside thinking of her with some other guy, kissing him, telling him she loves him, touching him, but at the same time, I can’t be with her, I literally get this feeling in my stomach like you can’t do this you can’t do this, like a honest pain in my heart, it literally hurts from all of this. She promised me she would get better and I kept believing it because I wanted too. I really don’t know what to do, that girl she was is the perfect girl for me, the absolute perfect girl. After her, I don’t look at anyone the same way, I can’t seem to shake it or move on, even though I know she isn’t my baby anymore, she's someone else. I want to be with her so bad, but not with who she is now, and I now know she’s not gonna change, this is who she is now. I gave up d-1 lacrosse scholarships’ and going to a real college to stay here for her. I ruined my life for a chance to be with her forever, because I was that in love. I still love her and the saddest thing is I know I can't love anyone after I found her, she was just different.
