Cooke In Elliotte Friedman’s 30 Thoughts
Good stuff as usual, but this caught my eye:
8. There’ve been calls for the Penguins to sit Matt Cooke when they visit Boston this week. You can bet his teammates would vote the opposite. If not, they’ll pay for what he did. Judging from Bill Guerin’s comments, they think ... — full article at cbc.ca

Free Manuals for Refurbishing Computers
Twenty years ago, I was building computer training labs in homeless shelters with no hardware budget. I developed a small refurbishing operation with a bunch of homeless guys who were much better at fixing things than I. We simply had to trial-and-error our way through it, much like the 600 or so nonprofit refurbishers in the Community MAR network. I only wish I had had access to a set of free, comprehensive how-to guides on how to get going on refurbishing computers then.
At long last, it's a new ball game. TechSoup has just posted that set of free comprehensive refurbishment how-to guides.
The reason we did it was because TechSoup's Kami Griffiths decided that it was high time to host a webinar on the subject, so she asked two best-in-the-business computer refurbishers to tell what they know on the subject. They were Pat Furr of Computers for Classrooms (CFC) and Bruce Buckelew of Oakland Technology Exchange West (OTX West). Both started refurbishing computers around the same time as I did in the early 90's but kept going and now each supplies well over 5,000 computers per year to schools, nonprofits, and low-income people.
You can listen to a recording of Bruce and Pat's free webinar, view their PowerPoint presentation, and download the podcast. The webinar archive page also links to our TechSoup page where you can download their newly revised start-up manuals, and seven PDF computer refurbishment start-up toolkits that Pat wrote under sponsorship by Microsoft.

Make History Backtracking Better
The History Submenus extension for Firefox is here to make thumbing through the browser’s history easier.

1940s decorating style
What are the key elements of 1940s interior design? What colors, designs, patterns and “feel” did we generally see? And why? To my mind, based on the advertising illustrations and magazine articles that I’ve seen from the period, typical designs from the immediate postwar 1940s – say, starting with 1946 – through to about 1953, [...]

Speidi business break-up
Nope, they aren't calling it quits as a couple or choosing to shy away from business ventures - they are simply choosing not to conduct business together, as a couple.
Instead, Heidi Montag has decided to take on the help of a clairvoyant, popular with the LA in crowd and even known as the "Hollywood Healer". Her new manager's real name is Aiden Chase.
Here's what Heidi Montag spilled to People Magazine about the new changes: "No longer is my husband the face of my business or managing my career. I am going to have Aiden Chase help manage my new life and career in a very different and positive way with light and love. The time for change is now. Never mix business with pleasure. We are no longer Speidi but Spencer and Heidi."
It sounds like a crazy move to hire a psychic as your manager...what did all those surgeries do to the sense Heidi had left? What does this mean for their marriage? If a husband is fired, it must mean the husband is sleeping on the couch.

The Confusing Fifth Starter Race
I really don’t know what to make of the Yankees fifth starter competition. None of the participants, with the exception of Alfredo Aceves, has looked particularly good. Joba Chamberlain did his usual one inning meltdown, although Sam Borden said he was told to work on his pitches . ... — full article at nybaseballdigest.com

Jamie T - 'Emily's Heart'
With good friends, you don't have to judge them on what they do, you love them for who they are and how they make you feel whenever they're around. They can mess up, they can excel, you're just happy to be along for the ride.
Jamie T feels like a good friend to me. I've never met him personally, never had any contact at all, in fact. But I'm always pleased to see him, always keen to hear his latest tall story or dewey-eyed ode to happier days. I like the cut of his jib, the things he notices, the fact that he's strong enough to admit weakness, the fact that he's a geezer who can write a tender, string-laden ditty like this and not go all EPIC/HUGE about it.
Hell, he's even toned down the swearing, so that everyone can enjoy its scuffed magic, and it doesn't mess with the sense of the thing or sanitise the reality of the situation in the song at all.
(Here's the video. "Mum I TOLD you we should've gone to Disneyland!")
Not that there's a lot you can do to sanitise a song sung from the floor, by a singer who is dying, after being shot by his girlfriend for messing her about. It doesn't matter if the bullets are metaphorical or real, the message is the same: some rules are not there to be broken, and if you do, the consequences will be dire.
There's no bitterness though. Jamie accepts his punishment with good grace, realising that he always knew that Emily was hardcore, and he was a fool to himself to try and get away with it. And it's that lack of self-pity, that calm, clear-eyed understanding that really, he got what was coming to him, that he knew the risks when he did what he did, and that Emily is quite right to BE hardcore about her own finer feelings, it's all of that which makes this such a beautiful thing.
No-one is saying guns are good, or that shooting your low-down cheating boyfriend is the right thing to do in any circumstances, it's just a song about that moment when you realise you're the agent of your own downfall. Somehow a slap on the face wouldn't get the message across in the same way.
Just as well they're not real bullets anyway, we'd all miss a good friend like Jamie something awful.

The Jewel of the Crown
Dalia Guenther @ Model Management (Germany)
Most likely our favorite moment in a career and you can judge it by the number of features we did on girls from SPS or Mandarina who are on their way to make it. Not just starting yet not arrived, building carefully what can already considered as the first half of an achievement. The feeling is so precious: the girl isn't signed in every city but gets a high response, gets editorial work everywhere she goes which makes us able to tell precisely what her skills are and what we can expect in a near future.
Dalia Guenther, the jewel of the jewels at Model Management, is exactly at this stage of her career when everything is possible and when the first results are getting actually exciting. Best example of what can be called thrilling at the moment is a spread in Tush, expensive yet not overexposed, showing her potential the right way and keeping us waiting eagerly for the next piece to come out. Signed with Elite Paris and Copenhagen so far, the gorgeous young lady caught our attention on her mother agency's wall (her card, not her don't worry) and the most recent digitals we just got are telling us again our first impression was the right one. We're totally in the mood for that kind of girls right now and her editorial by Markus Pritzi just proved us it's not only a matter of look: Dalia is definitely as expensive as the jewellery she wears.
