From LA to the Dept. of Treasury and Back

I just got back from DC after a whirlwind trip (Saturday to Tuesday). I hate flying cross country; it really bothers my injury. But I thought it would be interesting to go to the Dept. of Treasury with a bunch

Setting up a background for your project. By Ed Troxell, photo intern As a DIYer, you share your projects to show off your expertise and to help others find theirs. But building a project and writing the steps is only half the battle. The other half is capturing images of your work that clearly show what you're talking about and what you've done in your steps. As the photo intern for MAKE, I shoot l

Nanotubes help create thermopower waves

A paper published in Nature Materials this week details a new method for using nanotubes to generate significant amounts of power, at least for their size. When multi-walled carbon nanotubes are covered with a material that produces an exothermic reaction, the nanotubes help conduct the heat in one focused direction. To the apparent surprise of the researchers, this created an electrical pulse, a quick surge of power, that could be put to a number of uses. When you couple a heat-activated material with exothermically-reactive chemicals, it's theoretically possible to create self-propagating waves of heat. However, there are a couple of problems with implementing systems like these. The waves generally propagate in all directions, which is not terribly efficient for heat- or power-generating purposes. Furthermore, materials that both prevent the wave of the pulse from scattering and can stand up to a large amount of heat are fairly rare. Read the comments on this post

Chris Brown is irrelevant and asking for his fans to help

http://necolebitchie.com/2010/03/10/chris-brown-needs-help#more-63889 ---Quote--- Via Chris’s Saynow:I ain’t never really did this but right now I need all of my fans help. A lot of radio stations aren’t playing my records. They are not being that supportive and I wouldn’t expect them to. It’s on the fans and what you guys do in your power to bring me back. That’s all I need is you guys and nothing else will do that except for the fans. I don’t know what else to say. It’s nothing else that I can do. I’m doing everything that I need to do. I’m doing me as a person and I’m a better guy. It’s on ya’ll. My singing and my music I do it for you guys and everything else but it won’t be possible if I’m not relevant on the radio and it wouldn’t be possible for me to be an artist if I don’t have the support. I can’t be an underground mixtape artist. That’s where we are. I just want all my fans to help me. I love ya’ll. Peace ---End Quote---

How should I deal with a mentally ill parent at home? Being stable in college..?

Hi there, For the past 3 years, my mother has suffered a nervous breakdown in addition to severe depression and mild psychosis. She is on medication but still is having significant problems in that she refuses counseling due in large part to her delusions (she's very paranoid). Sadly, she also refuses to take medication periodically. In terms of my schooling, in my sophomore year I flunked (a D) my math class because of all the distraction at home (as you can imagine it was an enormous and unexpected surprise to my dad, too...so he hasn't been 100% there as much as he tries...he's working a job to support us too). Unfortunately, my schoolwork waned. Last year (the second year of the chaos), I wrote mediocre papers for my AP Language class, and the teacher sat me down once (after I had told her that I'd like a 5 on the exam for the credits in college) to inform me that I would "probably not pass". I got my butt into gear and landed a 5 on that exam, though. :) In terms of college applications, it has been a whirlwind. I've filled out all my college applications by myself (with the help of my dad's credit card from time to time - he wrote it down because of time constraints for me) in addition to the FAFSA (though it was only an hour-long I had to mesh out some problems with my dad's pin number...just the annoying process haha). I filled out my scholarship applications by myself, and have thus far gotten $1,000, which is exciting. I also was accepted to the best university I applied for which is a top-50 flagship state school. I was reading a thread on how a daughter had called home in a meltdown about a course/grades to her mother...who promptly calmed her down and helped her out. What do I do if I have a meltdown then? I'm planning on rushing and joining a sorority if that helps any...but I don't know too many people going to the university I'm going to. As a disclaimer, this is an alternate account to my main one on CollegeConfidential. I just have a ton of information posted on the latter and this post is a little personal. I appreciate the help :)

Stanley #7 Restoration #2: Final stripping and paint

Last night I left off with some stubborn japanning still on the plane, but with most of the lose crud and japanning stripped. Tonight I started off by attacking the last remnants of the japanning with some Zinssner stripper (somebody asked, so here is a picture of what I used) It was pretty aggressive with the japanning the first time around, but the stubborn spots really didn’t seem to want to come off. I had to go to town with a brass brush to get things clean, but eventually all of the japanning came off (well, there were a few tiny spots in corners that I didn’t worry about, but we’ll just ignore those, shal we?) There was still quite a bit of rust present, so I took some 220 grit sand paper and tried to get all of it off that I could prior to painting with Rustoleum. I know that the paint has stuff in it that will take care of minor rust, but I wanted to make sure it had to do as little work as possible. A good bit of sanding later, and we were off to the paint shop (AKA my garage floor). Fortunately the weather is getting pretty nice, so I was able to open up the garage door and paint, but it is still early enough that no bugs came in to see what was up with the lights! I masked off some areas of the frog I didn’t want to sand paint from, and started spraying light coats. I always hated spray paint until I finally figured out that if you make a “solid” coat, you put too much paint on in one pass. With that in mind, I put down a nice first coat that had decent coverage, but still left enough metal showing through that I didn’t think I would get runs or sags. Wait 15 min, repeat. 5 or 6 coats later (I honestly lost count) I think things are looking pretty good. Unfortunately, I remembered after the first coat that I had already cleaned up one side of the plane and that overspray would get all over that side. Oh well. I think I am going to wait until I grind the sole to worry about finishing up the sides. Besides, if all goes well, I should be able to re-grind the sides of the plane too to ensure they are square for use with a shooting board. Seems judicious if I am already in the machine shop (I’ll be doing the grinding anyway, so its not an issue of cost. That may cut into the nostalgia factor a little if I ruin the patina, but I keep reminding myself that functionality is the primary concern here! Finally, I wanted to put a picture up of what the lever cap cleaned up to look like once I was finished with it. The part looks so much cleaner relative to how it started, but I can’t help being excited that just the tiniest bit of that crud still remains in the crevasses to hint at the history of the plane. (sorry that the flash blew out some of the details, but you should be able to get the point.) Up next, refinishing the handles!
