Digital comics store-reader combo LongBox hands-on

After a much longer run as a private beta than originally intended, the digital comic book store and comics reader called LongBox has finally opened its doors. The public beta is available for Windows and Mac, and although it's still quite rough in some spots, it represents a major breakthrough

Conroy's net filter - are we becoming like China?

The debate over internet censorship, led by Communications minister Steve Conroy, continues to rage. Conroy wants all service providers to ban “Refused Classification” material hosted on overseas servers which includes child sex abuse content, bestiality, sexual violence and instructions for crime and drug use .What’s really interesting is the way it seems to have generated so much ferocity online. Do we actually need to be protected? Never mind the fact that like many people, in all my years of using the internet, I’ve never actually come across this sort of content and I am constantly on the net. And you have to say that the people who actually find this stuff would be seeking it out. Are we that incapable of looking after ourselves? And are becoming like China? Do we need the Great Firewall of Australia? This issue is not unique to Australia. Internet censorship is one of the big sleepers in society today and it’s happening right around the world. One of the most heavy handed is the so-called Great Firewall of China where anyone wanting to set up a web site has to meet with regulators and provide them with identification and photographs before they get permission. What are the chances of anyone launching a site critical of the regime? There has also been controversy about Google’s fight with the Chinese government about the censorship of its website. But it’s happening in other places, and some are more subtle than others. You can read about the enemies of the internet here. The Government’s plan involves asking internet service providers to block content that the National Classification Board decides should be "Refused Classification". Frankly, there would be many who would agree with such a ban. Conroy himself has attacked those who have accused him of heavy-handedness, saying all he is doing is blocking stuff not currently available in a newsagent, in a bookstore, on a DVD, at the movies or on television. Still, the feelings about this issue are so strong that Conroy’s enemies have set up a satirical web site in his name . Last month, we had Operation Titstorm where people protesting against internet censorship shut down the Federal Parliament website for the three days and sent parliamentary staff abusive and pornographic spam emails. Now there are plans for mass protests. This is extraordinary stuff, quite historic. There are some important questions that need to be answered here. The idea of filtering out pornography and material deemed to be inappropriate might have some support and is based on some solid arguments. But what concerns me is the detail. None of us are entirely sure how it would work. It’s a point raised by lawyers like Karen Haynes, a partner at Addisons. “Critics point to the as yet unanswered questions as to its implementation rather than its intended purpose. Namely, what will be blocked? Who decides? And are there better ways to achieve the purported aim of the scheme?” Good questions. Because you can bet mistakes will be made. As academic Nina Funnell notes, the Refused Classification category also includes socially and politically controversial material such as educational content on safer drug use and euthanasia. “While fetish and politically subversive content may be considered upsetting, fringe or distasteful to some, censoring on the grounds of taste is a wildly subjective game. It presupposes the offensive content is easily and universally recognisable. The reality is far more complex and, put simply, the Government should not have the right to block information that can inform debate of controversial issues. This isn't China, and it's not Iran.” In a speech delivered in January, US secretary of state Hillary Clinton denounced countries that censored the internet. “Countries that restrict free access to information or violate the basic rights of internet users risk walling themselves off from the progress of the next century,’’ Clinton said. Her comments were noted by Colin Jacobs, vice chairman of Electronic Frontiers Australia who says the government should heed Clinton’s words and scrap the plan. And it’s attracted attention around the world. This study from the Brooklyn Law School, quoted heresays: “Filtering looks easy and cheap, and calls to block access to material that is almost universally condemned - such as child pornography, extreme violence, or incitements to terrorism - are hard to resist. But this focus confuses means with ends.” Still, there are many who would say there is too much nasty stuff out there on the net and that lawmakers have a duty to protect the public. What do you think of Conroy’s plan? Is it necessary? Should we have controls on the internet to protect people? Or is it draconian? Panasonic Gets The First Full HD 3D Customers

It's not really a surprise, but at an event at a Best Buy store in New York City this morning, Panasonic and Best Buy showed off the first customers actually buying a combination of a large-screen 3D set, 3D glasses, and a 3D Blu-ray player. It was part of Panasonic's official launch of its 3D plasma line-up, which included some new information on content from DirectTV and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. The first customers, Brad and Ashley, spent a total of $3,157.33 (including tax) for their 3D products. List price of the VT20 50-inch plasma set is just under $2,500, including one pair of 3D glasses, and the BDT300 Blu-ray player is just under $400. Additional pairs of glasses cost $150 each. Panasonic says that 54-, 58-, and 65-inch plasma sets should be available soon, with pricing to be announced. At a panel announcing that the first sales would be exclusively through Best Buy's Magnolia Home Theater retailers, Shiro Kitajima, president of Panasonic Consumer Electronics, said that 100,000 customers have already tried out Panasonic's 3D system via a demonstration truck, and that Panasonic would be offering five TVs, a Blu-ray player, and a Blu-ray home-theater product this year. Mary Daily of Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment said that the company's first 3D Blu-ray title would be Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, out in April. (A flier in the store said that purchasers of the 3D TV and Blu-ray player bundle would get both that disk and Coraline by mail.) A DirectTV spokesman confirmed that the satellite provider was on track to launch three 3D channels in June, with a mix of programming, including a plan to offer the Major League Baseball all-star game in 3D (in conjunction with Fox). He said the company was talking to ESPN but had not yet reached a deal for carrying ESPN 3D. He said that 3D would only be a software upgrade for DirectTV boxes, so customers would not need new hardware on that end. Of course, the panel had lots of discussion about the benefits of 3D, with Best Buy America's President Michael Vitelli talking about how it provides an "immersive" experience that lets you feel like you are "in the game, not just at the game." Panasonic Senior VP Bob Perry said you could "literally" step into the picture (of course, he meant figuratively). Both emphasized that the new sets are Panasonic's best TVs for watching 2D HDTV content as well, and are being "future-proofed" in offering a way to 3D. Perry said that Panasonic had redesigned the phosphors and control logic in the set for better picture quality. Indeed, customer Ashley told me they had gone into the store planning to buy a large-screen HDTV but had been concerned that 3D was coming, when they were offered the opportunity to buy the first 3D set. Executives predicted huge growth for the 3D TV market, with Vitelli saying industry estimates were between 1 and 5 million 3D TVs sold in the U.S. this year. Perry predicted sales of 2 million sets. He also said he expected 3D to become a standard feature in TVs in a relatively short time. It took HDTV 12 years from when the first sets were introduced to when it became in virtually all TVs, because consumers didn't know what HD would look like, he said; but because consumers are family with 3D from movies, he thinks the adoption will be much faster. One drawback both mentioned was the different standards for glasses. Panasonic's glasses will work only with their TVs, and the same is true for other makers. Both Vitelli and Perry made a push for an industry standard for glasses, with Perry saying he wanted a standard, but that they couldn't compromise on quality. Here's more coverage from PCMag.

Me and iPad: Not now

I was up this morning at 8:30AM Eastern and saw the notes that the iPad was now available for pre-order. So I went through the process, updated my credit card on Apple's website, changed the address and phone number. The total price was a bit of a shocker -- approx $650 including tax. I hesitated. I was typing the order on a $350 Asus Eee PC that I had bought a long time ago. It gets about 8 hours on the battery. It has a 160GB hard drive, three USB ports, Ethernet, webcam builtin. Real keyboard. No DRM. I went to Amazon to see what I could get for $650. Lots of stuff I'm not buying that I'd like to have. A nice Polk Audio soundbar is about $500. I could fly roundtrip to San Francisco for that amount. I thought about which I would bring with me on a trip to San Francisco, an iPad or the Asus. No doubt, I'd bring the Asus. I have no idea what I can do with the iPad, and most important, I have a pretty good idea that I won't be able to run my software on it, or watch a movie I ripped from a DVD. Or listen to a podcast I downloaded with non-Apple software. I decided that no matter how important it is for my work to understand what Apple's product does, it can wait until I find out what the product is. I guess I no longer have the Apple bug up my ass that says I have to get one of everything they make on the day it comes out. So for now at least, the answer to the iPad is "no." Update: People say here and on Twitter that you'll be able to watch movies you rip from DVD or listen to podcasts downloaded with non-Apple software on an iPad. They reason that since you can do it on an iPod you will be able to do it on an iPad.

Which War Gave Us the Best Movies? Vulture Does the Math

As Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg seek to remind us this week with The Pacific, another large-budgeted, ten-part HBO miniseries, World War II was truly the United States' greatest war — but has it inspired the best movies? We were curious, so for each notable prolonged American armed conflict, Vulture averaged the scores for every battlefield-set* movie we could find on Rotten Tomatoes (assuming that if a film hadn't been indexed on RT it had simply been forgotten forever, like the French and Indian and Spanish-American wars). As it turns out, even if The Pacific — whose first hour was just made available on HBO's website — does as well with critics as HBO's previous Hanks-Spielberg collaboration, Band of Brothers (90%), WWII still won't be our most critically acclaimed war. So which is? The answer might surprise you! 1. "I'm no yokel, I was all the way to Miami once."

There are so many reasons to yell at the TV these days. Granted, I don't watch nearly as much TV as I used to, but beyond my time simply being spent on other things, the other reasons have everything to do with the fact that there are very few stations that still believe in picking one thing and being the very best at it. Our cable system used to have Fashion TV, which I watched like a fiend, but when Style launched we got that and it is, of course, a joke compared to its predecessor. Food Network had a greater number of actual cooking programs, TV Land had shows that weren't still in syndication, The Weather Channel did nothing but weather, and a wide variety of music videos were available on numerous channels. If I wanted 24 hours of mediocre reality shows I could have my fill on VH1, so stop sullying every other network with them! Honestly, the only place left to go is Extreme Archaeologists on The History Channel. I keep having a zillion random thoughts that are worthy of being expounded here, but my schedule as of late has been so oddly structured that by the time I'm home and have a stretch long enough to write something proper here I'm just too tuckered to do so. Tragic. I'm still having fun, mind you, but I know that if I actually record the things I'm having fun with my LJ will turn into an ironic mix of workout and foodie stuff. I do plenty of other things, but those are the to areas with all the new, exciting, growthy things happening. I've gotten all geeked out because next week I get to move up to my next weight level for strength training. More weight, a few more reps here and there, wooo! My calves are once more shapely thanks to the cardio machine time and my arms are coming along nicely. Dork! :) Last week I finished my first ever from-scratch Wikipedia article, of which I am immensely proud. It's a rarity for me these days to accomplish anything that would have any impact one someone else, so this was kind of a big deal for me. I learned sooooo much about Wiki coding. Thanks to many hours at work I've had time to read a ton and get caught up on some movies I'd been wanting to see/revisit. "Big Fish" the book is just as good as the movie, but a little more countrified, but in the expected magical, folk tale kind of way you'd hope for. Like O Brother, Where Art Thou?. The following items are high on my "NeedItNeedItNeedIt!" list: - A bundt pan - A half dozen ramekins - 3 proper round cake pans - A new immersion blender Still direly missing social interaction/having anyone around here to talk to about anything that happens, but aside from that, things are going well. Snow is melting and spring is firmly in the air. :)

The Villain of KICK ASS 2

Seems like KICK-ASS’ preview at South by Southwest went well. Superhero Hype describes it as a huge success. Can the Austinites in the Comic Vine community vouch for this? Either way, the talks of a sequel comic and movie are continuing. As I recall, Millar’s already set on titling it BALLS TO THE WALL. SPOILER WARNING: Click here to reveal hidden content (and a big parental advisory for language, too, kids) Christopher Mintz-Plasse had this to say about the sequel… "Last night at the Q 'n' A, someone asked Johnny (Romita Jr.) if they're going to have some stuff from 'Kick-Ass 2' at Comic-Con and they said, 'Yes,' which means they're going to get started on it, which is exciting… I met up with Mark actually a few months ago and we had a couple drinks and he told me it was going to be great, and he wants it to be very, very dark is what he's thinking…” Aaron Johnson, who plays Kick-Ass himself, chimed in… "Matthew [Vaughn] and Mark have a lot of ideas, and I think they work quite tightly… If you could get any more dark than 'Kick-Ass' is right now, then Mark had even darker ideas… Matthew went with absolutely everything but there were some things that were impossible to film. No one's going to see it because it's too disgusting.” I think the success of the HOSTEL movies have set the bar (high enough or low enough) for how much disgusting stuff audiences are willing to stomach. All of this hinges, of course, on whether KICK-ASS is a success. Even though, I’m terrible at gambling, I’ll put a money-less bet out there that it’s going to do well and that we’ll see BALLS TO THE WALL and more KICK-ASS adventures after that. I think it’s got enough buzz behind it already to recoup its modest budget. -- Tom Pinchuk is the writer of UNIMAGINABLE for Arcana Comics and HYBRID BASTARDS! for Archaia Comics.
