PlayStation's Move is Nintendo Wii with a glossy makeover
OK, I'll say it: PlayStation's motion controller is basically the Nintendo Wii 2.0.
PlayStation executives showed off the controller on Wednesday at the Game Developer's Conference in San Francisco, and gave proper homage during the news conference to Nintendo — which trailblazed motion control video gaming.
"Nintendo has done a great job introducing motion gaming to the masses," remarked PlayStation's senior vice-president of marketing, Peter Dille.
But Dille showed no shame in saying exactly who the motion controller, dubbed Move, is targeted toward: "Wii households."
Dille probably isn't wrong when he says Wii gamers want to move to the "next generation of motion gaming" and are "looking for a new and different experience."
The Wii's aged graphics aren't even in the same league as the crisp, beautiful high-definition offered by the PS3 or the Xbox 360. And hardcore gamers have felt left out by the lack of grown-up games available.
It's no secret that Nintendo sells a lot of crap.
Still, it's hard to see past just how much Sony is copying the Wii. But I guess a few old adages remain true today: If you can't beat them, join them, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Sony will be selling a Move starter kit, with the PlayStation Eye camera, a motion controller and a game.
That game will most likely be the Sports Champions game the company showed off at the conference — a package of mini-games, including table tennis and gladiator fighting, designed to show off the motion controls. Cough, cough, Wii Sports, cough.
Then there's the optional second controller with an analog stick to move player around the screen in shooter games. Cough, cough, Wii nunchuk, cough.
Personally, I'm excited to see how game developers use the motion controls on the PlayStation 3 when they become available this fall. But let's be honest: Move isn't new — it's the Wii with a glossy makeover.
