VMworld 2010: DataCore Showcases Why Its Storage Virtualization and Stretch High-Availability Software Eliminates Business Outages that Jeopardize Cloud Computing

At VMworld 2010 being held in San Francisco at the Moscone Center this week, DataCore is showcasing how fundamental software-based storage virtualization is to cloud computing. The Mirazon Group's Chief Technical Architect Barry Martin states: "Cloud computing platforms demand unprecedented uptime due to server and storage consolidation. DataCore's high-availability approach provides zero downtime. This is a tremendous advantage." Storage Virtualization and Stretch HA Software for Non-stop Clouds DataCore is blazing a trail by developing storage virtualization software that is a game-changer in terms of how resellers, solution providers as well as companies considering virtualization deployments manage and deploy virtualization projects and Clouds. The game-changer is that by deploying DataCore in a stretch high-availability (HA) configuration, DataCore delivers fault-tolerance that virtually eliminates storage-related outages that jeopardize business continuity and plague virtualization and consolidation initiatives. "The DataCore Software stretch high-availability solution delivers seamless, enterprise-class business continuity, data resiliency, and high performance at an affordable price tag," states Aaron Schneider, principal and co-founder, Helixstorm, Inc. "Your applications, virtual servers and virtual desktops and VM migrations continue to run non-stop despite back-end storage changes, failures or reconfigurations. Bottom-line, you get a true high-availability, shared storage solution that automatically protects your data and your virtual machines right out-of-the box just by deploying the virtual storage software in two locations." DataCore in the Cloud: Achieve the Highest Degree of Availability, Flexibility and Openness for Your Storage Host.net knows intuitively that storage virtualization software is priority one. "Any cloud computing platform, just like any virtualization deployment, needs to have portable software as its building blocks," notes Jeffrey Slapp, vice president of virtualization services, Host.net. "We chose DataCore in the core design of our virtual private data center (vPDC) platform alongside VMware and Cisco because it delivers the very best storage virtualization component." DataCore storage virtualization software is virtualizing the storage aspect of an all-virtual private data center (vPDC) platform developed by Host.net. Host.net delivers private cloud computing services for companies ranging from SMEs to large enterprises, utilizing a true software-based approach for the greatest flexibility. Check out the Case study here: Host.Net Case Study on Why Host.net Chose DataCore? Contain Costs, Avoid Risks, Boost Productivity and Extend the Life of IT Investments with DataCore Software Even though server and desktop virtualization and consolidation have garnered much of the virtualization press to date, now the real focus of concern is turning from how to virtualize and consolidate servers and desktops to how can we do more to mitigate the risk that results from consolidation. The key concerns being, "How do I insulate my business applications from storage related failures and disruptions that can severely impact virtual machine images and data that are key to running the business?" and "How good is my high-availability, disaster recovery and shared storage solutions?" DataCore addresses these concerns with proven software deployed in thousands of customer sites around the world. DataCore's software virtualizes disks across pools of tiered storage devices enabling users to provision, share, reconfigure, migrate, replicate, expand or upgrade without slowdowns or downtime. Simply put, DataCore: +Complements your storage and makes it more reliable, faster and better. +Works across unlike & incompatible storage devices. +Eliminates storage-related disruptions, bottlenecks and funding roadblocks that jeopardize virtualization and cloud deployments. Visit DataCore Customers and Partners Onsite at VMworld 2010 [Booth #1607] Numerous DataCore customers, including Host.net and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, who have deployed DataCore along with top DataCore solution providers will be onsite at DataCore's VMworld booth [#1607] and are available and standing by to answer questions, highlight best practices and explain the DataCore difference. DataCore solution providers and partners onsite include Grove Networks, HelixStorm, Red Level Networks, Sanity Solutions, The Mirazon Group and DataCore's value-add distributor Lifeboat Distribution. DataCore partner Andy Judge, founder and CEO of Miami-based Grove Networks, encapsulates the value DataCore brings as follows, "DataCore storage virtualization software gives our clients cost savings and flexibility that is not achievable with storage hardware alone. It takes hardware to a higher level - serving as a hardware and productivity 'enhancer' that pays dividends over the short and long term."

Tuesday’s beached marijuana boat marks third strange incident near ‘Jensen Beach Triangle’

Marijuana bales were transferred from a beached boat on Hutchinson Island and transferred to a St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office truck and taken away. (Ronda Robbins photo)By Will Greenlee What do a deadly plane crash, beached sailboat en route to Cuba and a boat laden with more than a half ton of marijuana have in common? They all happened or turned up since mid-May as part of what at least one local resident called the “Jensen Beach Triangle.” The three incidents happened along or off a strip of beach by the Island Beach Resort and Shuckers restaurant on Hutchinson Island in southern St. Lucie County. “Everybody’s saying it, too,” Ingrid Peters, 46, said Wednesday about the Jensen Beach Triangle reference. “It’s weird, Bermuda Triangle, Jensen Beach Triangle.” Peters, a Pennsylvania native who moved to Florida when she was 17, lives in a condominium just north of Shuckers. “It sounds crazy, the whole thing is bizarre,” Peters said. “I’ve lived here 15 years and I’ve never seen anything like this. Nothing happens here.” The string of unusual incidents began with tragedy May 15 when a single-engine, Soviet-era plane crashed into the ocean not far offshore. The plane appeared to be attempting an aerobatics maneuver. Killed in the incident were Fort Lauderdale pilot and part-time Jensen Beach resident Don Hopkin, 60, and his passenger, James B. Dooms, 39, of North Palm Beach. On Aug. 20, a sailboat came ashore. The sailboat owner, a man from England, and a woman who is from Germany, told customs officials they were about 2 miles offshore when their anchor line “gave way.” The sailboat stayed beached for several days. And on Tuesday, officials found more than 1,100 pounds of marijuana — with a street value of more than $1 million — in a boat that came ashore, an incident U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement continue to investigate. “That is really weird,” said Ronda Robbins, 48, who watched Tuesday from her 15th floor condo as the pot boat made its way ashore and a man jumped off. “It just seems everything happens right here in this area. I don’t know what it is.” Blayne Rosely, who manages the Island Beach Resort and helps with Shuckers, on Wednesday walked along a wooden boardwalk leading to the beach, pointing out the spots where the boats came ashore and the plane crashed. “I don’t know how to wrap it up other than it’s quite strange,” he said. “Obviously, the airplane crash was a major tragedy and there was a wedding going on actually on the beach when it happened. There were people in the wedding party that actually ran out there and tried to help.” The Bermuda Triangle, or Devil’s Triangle, is a “mythical geographic area” off the southeast coast of the United States, according to the U.S. Coast Guard website. The points connect at Miami, Bermuda and San Juan, Puerto Rico, to connect the triangle. The area is known for a reported “high incidence of unexplained losses of ship, small boats and aircraft. “The Coast Guard does not recognize the existence of the so-called Bermuda Triangle as a geographic area of specific hazard to ships or planes,” the website states. In addition to the three incidents, Robbins, a Jacksonville native, mentioned a manatee rescued in front of Shuckers and a dead, 10-foot-long hammerhead shark that washed up near her condo in the last two months. “It looked like it had two bullet holes in it,” she said of the shark. A handful of beachgoers dotted the windy oceanfront in the area before lunch Wednesday. Gerry Crepeau, 56, and his 52-year-old wife, Cathy, sat in beach chairs south of Shuckers as rough surf sent crashing waves lapping at their feet. “I think it’s a just freaky thing that happened,” Cathy Crepeau said. “It’s very unusual.” The Crepeaus live in Massachusetts and were visiting Cathy Crepeau’s mother who lives in a condo in the area. “Usually things happen in threes so maybe it’s done now,” Cathy Crepeau said.

Urban Myth? Here's A Coin Misnomer You Don't Want To Fall For

New coin collectors and those outside of the hobby seem to have all kinds of ideas about coins that either aren't true. Of course, that's the case with many people who are unfamiliar with something. I was reading Numismaster, which is an online coin periodical, and came across this article in which an editor who wrote the piece talks about a person who thinks all proof coins are silver coins -- and that the 's' mint mark on copper-nickel clad proof coins is there to make unsuspecting buyers think they're purchasing silver coins. Wow! Of course, that's not true. The 's' mint mark simply denotes a coin that has been made at the San Francisco mint. And not all proof coins are silver. However, that story just goes to show how extreme some of those urban myths can be!

1961: Miles Davis - In Person Night at the Blackhawk San Francisco - 1961 (Complete 4 CD’s)

Artist: Miles Davis Album: In Person Friday and Saturday Nights at the Blackhawk Label: Columbia Year: 1961, Release Date: June 3, 2003 Number of Discs: 4 Quality: mp3@320 + all scans REPOST with new links The Legacy imprint’s issuance of the complete performances of the Miles Davis Quintet at San Francisco’s (infamous) Blackhawk in April of 1961 sets straight a very confusing record once and for all. The individual nights have been available in many different configurations over the decades, first as LPs, and in even weirder ones on CD. That’s all over now, as this pair of double discs contain both nights in their entirety, adding a total of four previously unreleased performances to Friday night and nine unissued performances to Saturday night, including an entire unreleased fourth set. This alone is reason to purchase the four-CD package, though both evenings are available individually as well. In terms of which night of the two was better, it’s a toss-up. This short-lived version of the quintet featured Paul Chambers, Wynton Kelly, Jimmy Cobb, and Hank Mobley with Davis. These four discs should begin to fill the void of criticism about this band. Though short-lived, the unique character of this group was its sheer intensity and diversity of attack. Because of the departure of Cannonball Adderley and John Coltrane, Davis had to rely as much on a muscular attack in playing his instrument as his considerable gift for melodic improvisation. For his part, Mobley had the shoes of two monster players to fill, and he does so elegantly with a ton of fire in his playing. But it is Kelly and Chambers who really set the pace for this band. Kelly fills space in the middle register with an amazingly percussive attack that is as rhythmic as it is harmonically inventive. Mobley steps away from the hard bop side of his trademark sound to go back to the Sonny Rollins book of bebop, and even Davis uses the method of attack and surprise that gained him a reputation with Charlie Parker. Chambers is the man on whom it all turns, equating the parts of the band’s aesthetic. He and Cobb move toward one another and Chambers translates the shifting rhythmic patterns and segues to Kelly, whose interplay with him is almost instinctual, and then through Kelly to the horn players.Kelly’s sense of that ever-changing momentum and dynamic allows him to be a real part of the rhythm section (as opposed to a melodic counterpart to the front line) and adds room for the horn players to move about inside the bridges he creates between the two factions. His right-hand soloing is based on a series of harmonic and intervallic modes he continually pulls out of his hat and feeds Chambers, more in terms of directional possibility, which is vertical rather than horizontal. For evidence, check the contrast between the opening tunes: Friday’s ”Oleo” at breakneck speed, and the nearly 13-minute ”If I Were a Bell” on Saturday, which lopes and takes its time articulating the varying chromatic architectures being erected not only during the solos, but in the band’s ensemble playing as well. The common tunes from both nights — such as ”If I Were a Bell,” ”Walkin’,” ”On Green Dolphin Street,” ”No Blues,” and ”Love, I’ve Found You” — differ radically from one another. On Friday everything is pent-up; chops are flying off the bandstand furiously, with each player holding tight to Miles’ arrangements, but forcing the issue of the solos. On Saturday, the set is relaxed, uptempo in most cases, and filled with a kind of comfort that allows for chances to be taken without consequences. The reading of ”Autumn Leaves” and the unique version of Thelonious Monk’s ”Well, You Needn’t” provide an astonishing look at bandmembers who could pull off virtually anything, although they had only been together a short time. Add the set of ballads on Saturday — ”I Thought About You,” ”Someday My Prince Will Come,” and ”Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise” — that closes out the weekend, and the listener perhaps hears as many dimensions to Miles Davis as existed at the time. The sound is pristine; the packaging is lovely, with new notes by Eddie Henderson that accompany Ralph J. Gleason’s original ones. Complete documentation accompanies each disc, and no Davis fan should be without these recordings purchased separately or as a set. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guide
