Research Spotlight: Study connects DFW quakes with injection well
A study of seismic activity near Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport by researchers from SMU and UT-Austin reveals that the operation of a saltwater injection disposal well in the area was a "plausible cause" for the series of small earthquakes that occurred in the area between Oct. 30, 2008, and May 16, 2009.
The incidents under study occurred in an area of North Texas where the vast Barnett Shale geological formation traps natural gas deposits in subsurface rock.
Production in the Barnett Shale relies on the injection of pressurized water into the ground to crack open the gas-bearing rock, a process known as "hydraulic fracturing." Some of the injected water is recovered with the produced gas in the form of waste fluids that require disposal.
A state tectonic map prepared by the Texas Bureau of Economic Geology shows a northeast-trending fault intersects the Dallas-Tarrant county line approximately at the location where the DFW quakes occurred. The study concludes, "It is plausible that the fluid injection in the southwest saltwater disposal well could have affected the in situ tectonic stress regime on the fault, reactivating it and generating the DFW earthquakes."
The earthquakes do not appear to be directly connected to the drilling, hydraulic fracturing or gas production in the Barnett Shale, the study concludes. However, re-injection of waste fluids into a zone below the Barnett Shale at the nearby saltwater disposal well began in September 2008, seven weeks before the first DFW earthquakes occurred.
No earthquakes were recorded in the area after the injection well stopped operating in August 2009.
An SMU team led by seismologists Brian Stump and Chris Hayward placed portable, broadband seismic monitoring equipment in the area after the earthquakes began.
The seismographs recorded 11 earthquakes between Nov. 9, 2008, and Jan. 2, 2009, that were too small to be felt by area residents. Cliff Frohlich and Eric Potter of UT-Austin joined the SMU team in studying the DFW-area sequence of "felt" earthquakes as well as the 11 "non-felt" earthquakes. Their study, "Dallas-Fort Worth earthquakes coincident with activity associated with natural gas production," appears in the March issue of The Leading Edge, a publication of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists.
Stump and Hayward caution that the DFW study raises more questions than it answers.
"What we have is a correlation between seismicity, and the time and location of saltwater injection," Stump said. "What we don't have is complete information about the subsurface structure in the area - things like the porosity and permeability of the rock, the fluid path and how that might induce an earthquake."
"More than 200 saltwater disposal wells are active in the area of Barnett production," the study notes. "If the DFW earthquakes were caused by saltwater injection or other activities associated with producing gas, it is puzzling why there are only one or two areas of felt seismicity."
Further compounding the problem, Hayward said, is that there is not a good system in place to measure the naturally occurring seismicity in Texas: "We don't have a baseline for study."

6 Style Blogs And Their Singular Obsessions
Whether it's Disney characters, Muppets, or even cavemen, we love finding a spot-on runway reference that designers probably weren't even intending in the first place. These six blogs, however, take this hobby to the next level, devoting entire sites to their special sources of sartorial inspiration, think Fran Drescher (yes, The Nanny), Strangers With Candy, and everyone's favorite babysitter, Claudia Kishi (just to name a few). Read on for more strangely inspirational sites to bookmark now.
What Claudia Wore
"What Claudia Wore" is a site that records the young babysitter's best fashion moments from the book series. For example, "At that meeting she was wearing '50s-style cat's-eye glasses frames, a plastic barrette in the shape of an alligator, a tie-dyed t-shirt, and bell-bottoms." Didn't we spot her in Williamburg last weekend?

Houseworks. A Book on Living Clean, Green and Organized at Home
When I’m working I have no problem organizing tasks and keeping things on track. But somehow when it comes to my own home I’m a disaster: I can never find the school permission forms, I usually end up making grilled cheese AGAIN because I have nothing planned or in the cupboards, I don’t host playdates because of the state my home is in.
I think I found a book that might just help me get my home in the same kind of order as my office. Houseworks by Cynthia Townley Ewer of OrganizedHome.com, a book on how to live clean, green and organized at home.
When the folks at DK Canada first sent this along I thought it looked interesting but wasn’t really for me; I have limited time as is, how is reading a book going to help me. But then I started to flip through the pages. I came across the section Declutter the Closet. Following some simple rules (like only keeping items that fit now, not 10 pounds from now) I actually organized my closet in an afternoon. Wow, now I can find clothes easily.
I think what I like most about the Houseworks is the structure and the concise content. The Declutter the Closet was two pages but it was chunked making it easy to read and the images helped illustrate the point being made. This grouping and chunking content into readable bits is the structure of the entire book. Tips and tricks in each section are highlighted in callout boxes making them easy to focus on too.
Houseworks helps you tackle your home in stages and each stage is broken down into steps, making the task of decluttering or organizing or cleaning doable
Along with decluttering, organizing and cleaning your home, Houseworks also covers
how to plan, save, organize and store food and clothing.
selecting, saving, maintainging and cleaning various surfaces in your house like floors, mattresses, plumbing and more.
Decluttering and organizing specific areas of your home such as the bathroom, entertainment and household storage areas and more.
Setting up an information area and organizing paperwork like schedules, bills and filing.
Houseworks also includes examples throughout the book as well as some handy forms and planners you can duplicate for your own home. You'll also find a handy list of additional resources found on the web.
I may only have one closet done but I’m well on my way to better organizing my home.
* A copy of Houseworks was provided for the purpose of this review
GIVEAWAY!
The folks at DK Canada know how hard it is to balance a chaotic home so they’re offering one (1) EverythingMom member their own copy of Houseworks. To enter just tell us one aspect of your home you would like help organizing.
This contest is only open to EverythingMom members. Not a member? It’s quick and easy to join. Contest is only open to Canadian Residents and ends March 24, 2010. One (1) EverythingMom members will be randomly chosen after that.

Europe May Give New Parents More Time With Their Tots
Filed under: Newborns, In The News, Childcare
"Thank you, EU." European children may have reason to praise the continent's leaders for extending minimum parental leave. Credit: nickysue_evans, Flickr
The European Union's employment ministers propose tacking on an additional month to the minimum parental leave in the EU's 27 member nations -- from three months to four months per parent.
The European news Web site EurActiv.com reports the proposal would apply to all workers, requiring changes to national laws in England, Belgium, Ireland, Portugal, Romania and Malta.
The Council of Ministers approved the proposal March 8 during a meeting in Brussels. EurActiv.com reports the proposal is designed to encourage more fathers to take parental leave.
Under the proposal, parents will be allowed to take four months off each and transfer months between them to allow one parent to take up to seven months off. At least one month cannot be transferred to the other parent, a move EurActiv.com reports is seen as a boost to gender equality.
Parental leave comes on top of paid maternity leave, which is currently granted for a minimum of 14 weeks.
Before these changes can take effect, they have to be ratified within two years in each of the bloc's 27 nations, the Associated Press reports.
Maternity leave is taken by the mother around the birth or adoption of a child and can vary in the European Union from 14 weeks in Malta to as much as 16 months in Sweden, the wire service reports.
There is no EU law mandating the same benefit for a new father.

Twitter Tuesday - this week's Twitter news, apps and more
Filed under: Features, Social Software, web 2.0, Microblogging
Hey Twitter Tuesday true believers! It's been a big week, with some of the Twitter crew down in Austin, TX for South by Southwest Interactive. As you may recall, Twitter initially launched at SXSW, and it's been a huge part of the conference ever since. No surprise, then, that Twitter's @Ev chose this event to launch a big new Twitter feature. Read on for that announcement, plus apps and add-ons -- there's even some Tweetie news!
Let's do this thing!
The big news in Twitter this week is the announcement of "@anywhere" during Evan Williams' SXSW keynote. @anywhere means that Twitter won't just be limited to Twitter.com and all of the lovely third-party apps and sites I cover in this column. Nope, Twitter will really be ... anywhere. Twitter usernames will be popping up all over huge sites like Amazon, eBay, MSNBC and Digg. You'll eventually be able to bring @anywhere to your own site, too, with just a little bit of Javascript magic.
