R. Jefferson, Hill lead Spurs over Timberwolves
Richard Jefferson had 19 points, nine rebounds and three assists in his first start in seven games to help the San Antonio Spurs to a 103-85 victory over the hapless Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday night.
George Hill had 19 points and eight assists and Tim Duncan had 15 points and eight rebounds for the Spurs, who have won six of their last seven games, including two of three without injured star Tony Parker.
Wayne Ellington scored 17 points for the Timberwolves, who have lost eight in a row and 14 of their last 15 games. They shot just 36 percent from the field and played without forward Kevin Love, who was out with a sprained left foot.
Things looked ominous for the Spurs when Parker broke his right hand on March 6. But the Spurs took the Cavaliers to the wire and have beat up on the Knicks and Timberwolves to keep a little momentum going.
They kept it going against a Timberwolves team that may have folded up the tents on this season. The Wolves have just one victory since Feb. 6 and this young club is starting to show its frustrations.

Spurs guard Tony Parker won't need surgery on his broken right hand, meaning he may be able to return for the playoffs. He is expected to miss about six weeks. "Everything is by degrees. That would be worse if he needed surgery, so I guess it makes me feel better," Spurs coach Greg Popovich said.

Knicks set franchise losing record against Spurs (AP)
Losing Tony Parker hurt, just like when Manu Ginobili went down around this time last season. Parker picked up the slack then. Ginobili is doing the same so far. Ginobili scored 28 points and the San Antonio Spurs won for the fifth time in six games with a 97-87 victory over the New York Knicks, who guaranteed themselves a franchise-record ninth consecutive losing season.

Grizzlies fall to Spurs 102-92, by Matt Tumbleson
The Grizzlies undoing came in the second quarter when a 30-11 run over an eight minute stretch gave the Spurs a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the way. The Grizzlies also struggled to match the Spurs firepower off the bench throughout the contest. San Antonio’s reserve group outscored the Grizzlies 66-15 for the game.
The loss drops the Grizzlies to 32-31, while the Spurs moved to 36-24 on the season.
The Grizzlies entered the contest looking to eliminate one of the most bizarre stretches of basketball in NBA history, as they came into the game as the only team in league history to have concurrent streaks of at least six wins on the road and six losses at home.
The Grizzlies started out of the gates firing on all cylinders, opening up with a 6-0 run, giving all impressions that they were going to do whatever necessary to stop their dubious streak. After the Spurs steadied themselves, Marc Gasol electrified the crowd with a mid-court steal that led to a one-man fast break, establishing the Grizzlies offense in the process.
Memphis used the momentum to control the rest of the first quarter with a balanced effort from their top four players, building their lead to as many as 26-17 with 1:23 remaining. Keeping the Spurs in the contest early was the play of rookie DeJuan Blair, who came off the Spurs bench to score eight first quarter points on 4-of-5 from the field.
The Grizzlies control of the contest in the first quarter stood in stark contrast to their effort in the second, as the Spurs opened the second stanza with a 20-4 run that eventually built to 30-11. Richard Jefferson provided a glimpse of why the Spurs were considered to be last offseason’s big winners in the second quarter. In what has been a largely frustrating season for Jefferson, the 9-year vet recaptured the magic that made him such a valuable player in New Jersey, scoring 12 points off the Spurs bench in the quarter to help San Antonio assume control of the contest.
The Grizzlies were able to stay within striking distance but were never able to get over the hump largely due to the five San Antonio three-pointers in the second quarter, and went into the half down 58-48.
The Spurs received disparaging news at the start of the second half that could have implications on their remaining 22 games. X-ray results showed that Tony Parker would not return to the contest after suffering a fractured fourth metacarpal in his right hand.
Without the former All-Star and NBA Finals MVP in the lineup the Grizzlies took advantage of the absence of one of the game’s top point guards by opening up the second half with a 9-2 run.
The Grizzlies remained within three to six points throughout much of the third quarter, but missed a major opportunity to score easy baskets at the line after the Spurs picked up their fifth foul with 4:50 remaining in the quarter. The Grizzlies would only shoot one free-throw the rest of quarter and trailed 78-72 going into the final stanza.
The Grizzlies opened up the fourth with O.J. Mayo leading a bench group of Hamed Haddadi, Darrell Arthur, Marcus Williams and Sam Young who were tasked with closing the gap on what had been a dominate performance from the Spurs reserve group. The second unit appeared to provide a spark early, closing the lead to 78-74 on their first offensive possession, but that was as close as the Grizzlies would get the rest of the night.
Mayo led the Grizzlies with 23 points, while Marc Gasol added 17 points and 13 rebounds in the losing effort. Richard Jefferson tallied his second highest scoring game of the season with 18 points with Tim Duncan chipping in 17 points for the Spurs.
