Final Poster for Disney's Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

Source: www.firstshowing.net --- Wednesday, March 10, 2010 Along with the premiere of the final trailer last week , DISNEY has also debuted what looks to be the final official poster for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time over on UGO today. Last July we got to see the first two magazine-like posters for Prince of Persia , which seemed a bit too stylish for the general public to appreciate. But now they've released a typical action-movie poster with cheesier poses from the main actors. To be honest, it's not that impressive of a poster, it's just kind of bland and boring. Oh and in related news, Prince of Persia will also be showing in IMAX worldwide this summer (via Collider ). Check it out below! Follows a prince who must stop an angry ruler from unleashing a sandstorm that could destroy the world. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is directed by English director Mike Newell , of Donnie Brasco , Pushing Tin , Mona Lisa Smile , and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire previously. The screenplay was co-written by Doug Miro and Carlo Bernard ( The Uninvited , The Sorcerer's Apprentice ) and the story was developed by Jordan Mechner , one of the original creators of the video game. DISNEY will be bringing Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time to theaters everywhere starting on May 28th, 2010 this summer. Will you be seeing it? Discover More: Hype , Opinions , Posters ...

Reed Smith Announces Salary and Bonus News(Plus other Reed Smith news.)

Last May, Reed Smith announced a 10 percent across-the-board salary cut for its associates. The cut went into effect on July 1, 2009. This week brought salary and bonus news from the firm. From one Reed Smith source: Reed Smith announced 2010 compensation today. The firm's "raises" are essentially only restoring the original salary levels that we all had before the firm's universal 10% cut in 2009. I have not heard of anyone receiving any sort of bonus. UPDATE / CORRECTION: Actually, it appears that the salary announces were highly individualized -- and all over the map. Some associates received sizable raises, some received modest raises, some were kept frozen, and some saw their salaries cut even further. Most appear to be unhappy: "Morale is very low," said one. Bonuses were announced too. A different RS source informed us: "Salary and bonus memos are out. Bonuses are per usual, a set structure based on hours." But the Reed Smith bonuses may have been more theoretical than practical. "I think that very few people hit [the required] hours," this tipster told us. There's a bit more Reed Smith news, most of it not happy.... As reported by the BLT, a D.C. court has reinstated a wrongful termination lawsuit brought against the firm by a former associate: The former associate, Danielle Cesarano, who now works at the State Department, filed a complaint against Reed Smith in October 2003. Cesarano, who is represented by Webster, Fredrickson, Correia & Puth, had complained internally earlier that the firm was not providing her reasonable accommodation for a physiological disorder she developed after burning her dominant hand in 2001 at a Reed Smith trial training program. How do you burn your hand during a training program? Is Biglaw turning into a white-collar "Survivor" faster than we thought? Finally, in other problematic news for Reed Smith, a source reports: A criminal trial is ongoing in PA right now, in which five defendants, including the former PA House Minority whip, face numerous felony counts arising from the criminal conspiracy set forth in the Presentment. [O]n Wednesday, state employee Melissa Lewis gave testimony identifying Reed Smith partner Efrem Grail by name, and indicating that Reed Smith is the unnamed "law firm" referenced in the Presentment. Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter Tracie Mauriello is Tweeting from the courtroom. You can find her Tweets by searching bonusgate and grail or bonusgate and reed smith. This is a bit heavy for a Friday afternoon -- one of our sources compared it to Watergate -- but maybe we'll revisit this "bonusgate" scandal next week, when we're more in the mood for heavy lifting. If you have info, feel free to email us (subject line: "Reed Smith and bonusgate"). D.C. image for My First Week as a Developer Evangelist

My First Week as a Developer Evangelist

I thought it would be fun to share what it was like my first week making the transition from Redmond to Silicon Valley in my new role. And more importantly, I thought it would be fun to explain publicly to my uncle back in Mississippi that my job isn’t to pray for the developers of the world. =D Last weekend I got off the plane from Seattle on Thursday afternoon, so Friday and Saturday I attended Dare2BeDigital with Lynn Langit and her crew from Southern California. (Yes, my new team put me right to work!) Two cool things I learned from Dare2BeDigital were Small Basic and Scratch. Small Basic is basically a super lightweight IDE, similar to Visual Studio but for kids. We coded against a Turtle object to make it move in certain directions and with certain colors, kinda like a glorified etch-a-sketch. This IDE even comes with its own IntelliSense. Small Basic was one of the coolest things I’ve seen in quite some time, but then again I’m bias towards anything Visual Studio-like. Definitely check it out if you have kids at home. Scratch is a programming environment where kids can drag and drop flow logic (instead of having to write the code themselves) to program an object (aka a “Sprite”) as shown below from their getting started guide. The default Sprite is the yellow cat you see below. What really makes Scratch really cool is how many games/applications built with it are out there to explore and “remix” (as they say on the website), especially since the scripts for the games/apps are provided as the download. Again, another “must check out” if you have kids at home. I also got the chance to meet a lot of folks like Sunshine Mugrabi (we’re going to have lunch sometime), Van Riper (who is helping to organize CLS this year!!!), and Peter Kellner (a MVP who is giving me lots of cycling tips for the area), and Tammy Kellner (who got me animal balloons to make for the kids). Sunday I spent Sunday disconnected from work exploring Santa Cruz. It reminded me of home, minus the surfers and big waves and salsa dancers. Monday I had a house hunting trip to explore the areas I wanted to live in. The bad news was that I got food poisoning from lunch that day. The good news the food poisoning didn’t hit me until several hours after training at my new karate dojo that night. Tuesday I made it to the Microsoft Silicon Valley Campus for the first time. I had my Mid Year Career Discussion with my new manager that morning. It was kinda ironic to have a mid-year career discussion on your first day at the office (recall this was an internal transfer within Microsoft). But considering the mid-point is really to talk about career goals, it gave me a chance to explain to my new manager what I want to do when I grow up. I met my officemate Joel who is focusing on startups in the area. And after a quick trip to San Jose Airport, I retrieved my lost reading glasses from the plane. (Thanks Alaska Air!) When I got back, Joel also gave me a tour of the campus. It was surreal to be on a very mini version of the Redmond campus that is warm and sunny in March. It was also surreal to see a Google security car driving down the street just a few blocks away. Joel introduced me to the Hacker Dojo later that evening. It is a non-profit that runs a house for folks to go hang out and code, including free wifi and power. The organization runs purely on donations. There are lots of events that happen there. I was invited to an event upstairs, but considering the food poisoning event of the night before, I had to decline so I could go home and sleep. And for the record, I’m okay with this being called a “Dojo” since it is a training facility. See! I’m not unreasonable! =D However, just be careful if you ask me if I’m going to the dojo tonight, because if you do not specify an adjective, I will default to my karate dojo. Wednesday Finally, after a full night’s sleep and my reading glasses with me, I had my first almost 9-5 day at the office (it was really a 9am-midnight day, but who is counting?) The morning was spent mostly responding to email from the past week. But I have to say, I’ve gone from 250 emails a day as Program Manager of CodePlex to less than 10 a day in my new role. But everyone around me keeps laughing, saying “Just give it time.” I left the office at 4:15 to head to East Bay .NET, which is located in “East Bay” (and for the record I live and work in “South Bay”). This was my first experience with a GPS Navigation system. OMG, how have I been functioning all my life without one?!! Thank you Kenny (an Academic Evangelist for the area) for letting me borrow yours. I purchased my own GPS Navigation system this weekend. It has improved my quality of life by 10x, if not 100x. I made it to East Bay .NET at 6:10pm, just a few minutes late. It was my first introduction to Silicon Valley rush hour. We had an insane about of famous geeks in that room, which included Beth Massi, Robin Shahan, Ward Bell, Kathleen Dollard, and Julie Lerman. I had a great time meeting folks, like Peter Tweed and Deborah Kurata (who runs East Bay .NET). I got home well after midnight. Thursday After working on some upcoming conference planning (OSBC, EclipseCon – I can’t believe i get to go to these conferences now as a part of my day job! I’m a very lucky and happy geek.), I spent the afternoon being tutored 1-1 on using Entity Framework and SQL Server. I have *a lot* of technologies to get ramped up on. That afternoon, I was on a conference call with Jono Bacon planning the upcoming Community Leadership Summit in July the weekend before OSCON. (And yes, that’s me in the photo playing close attention =). I had a great time last year, so I leaped at the opportunity to help organize the event this year. And of course, since my life is the mathematical proof of Murphy’s law, my cell phone decides to stop working in the middle of the conference call. I’ve never had a BlackJack II stop playing audio while at the same time freeze the UI so I couldn’t hang up. I had to cold reboot the phone (yes, cold reboot as in removing the battery) to dial back. But, still no audio, so I picked up a landline phone. I was so embarrassed, but everyone on the call was cool with giving me a quick recap. I was invited back to the Hacker Dojo for an Ignite get together, but I declined because I made a commitment to go to karate at least 2x a week. Not knowing too much about Ignite, I figured there would be other Ignite talks I could attend in the upcoming months. Nothing like trial and error first week on the job. Friday I got to work only to realize I left my power adapter in East Bay earlier in the week (an hour’s drive away, if not more). And since everything I own is in storage, including my 2 other spare power adapters, I once again conceded to Murphy’s law. Fortunately, the IT folks here had an extra power adapter to loan me for the day, so these guys here totally rock. I spent the morning installing Visual Studio 2010 Release Candidate, but when I fired it up, I hit the rainbow bug. I about had a heart attack. Fortunately, I guessed it was something to do with the VS color service, and then I realized I had been using the Color Theme extension for Beta 2. And sure enough, the extension’s blog post listed the workaround. I spent the afternoon reading Professional ASP.NET MVC 1.0 (I figured I needed to start somewhere getting ramped up, instead of wasting time trying to figure out where to start.). I’m using VS 2008 to follow along step by step, which is really making me miss some of the new features in VS 2010. Weekend Considering I was practically gone the entire month of February, from leaving CodePlex, watching the Superbowl, celebrating Mardi Gras holidays back home, attending MVP Summit, and relocating to CA, I’m a bit behind where I want to be for my DevDays Netherlands talks at the end of the month. I need to write a completely new talk, so that’s my Sunday night project. But, I made sure to spend all day Saturday and Sunday in the nice warm California sunshine. Natural skin tone, here I come!

Ga. man who posted ‘Elton John must die’ arrested (AP) – NIMBRUNG.NET

ATLANTA – A Georgia man who posted a video of himself on the Internet holding a sign that said " Elton John must die" has been arrested for making terroristic threats . Neal Horsley , 65, was arrested early Wednesday in Carrollton, about 50 miles west of Atlanta , said Atlanta Police Sgt. Curtis Davenport. He would not say who Horsley is accused of threatening, but Horsley's son, Nathan, said he thought the arrest was connected to the video about the musician. In the video posted Feb. 28 on YouTube, Horsley held the sign in front of a building where he said John has a condo. John's publicist, Fran Curtis, confirmed that John has an Atlanta apartment but declined further comment. Horsley was upset that John, who is gay, told Parade magazine in an interview last month that he thought Jesus was a "compassionate, super-intelligent gay man who understood human problems." "What Elton John has done is desecrated the image of the Lord Jesus Christ, blasphemed the Lord Jesus Christ ," Horsley said in the video. Horsley founded the Creator's Rights Party and has declared himself a candidate in the 2010 governor's race. He kicked off his campaign July 4, 2008 in downtown Carrollton, wearing a placard showing the head of an aborted fetus while singing an anti-abortion song. The state ethics commission , which oversees election filings, has no record of Horsley's campaign. He previously gained notoriety in the late 1990s for his role in establishing a Web site that published the names and addresses of doctors who performed abortions. Planned Parenthood officials called the site a "hit list for terrorists." Fulton County jail records showed Horsley also faces charges of criminal defamation and disseminating terroristic threats over the Internet. He was being held Thursday in the Fulton County jail on $40,000 bond. As conditions for his release, a judge said he must live with his son in a house with a phone landline and must pay 10 percent of his bond in cash. Horsley's son said his father doesn't have an attorney. Panicky White House Pushing (Too!) Hard to Close Health Care Deal

The White House is scrambling frantically to force the House to pass the Senate health care reform bill. (See a summary of how we got to this desperate point at House Health Care Vote Hinges on Trust (or Fear) of Obama.) But I didn't fully appreciate just how frantic the Obama administration feels until, to my astonishment, I received an anonymous campaign-style robocall this morning that: decried the "greedy" insurance industry for "million-dollar bonuses and 39% increases" in premiums; indignantly entoned "Enough of this greed!" several times; and urged me to call Congress, and provided a direct-line phone number. Never mind that the Bush and Obama administrations bailed out private insurers with public funds and conveniently overlooked their fat-cat bonuses... Never mind that President Obama's health care "reform" bill provides billions of new revenues and millions of new mandated buyers to private insurers, and provides almost no cost controls over premiums that insurers can charge. Besides, calling my Congressman, Republican Ed Royce (CA-40), would be a waste of time. There's not one chance in a million he would vote for this bill. Rep. Royce has made his stance abundantly clear in dozens of local town halls. Don't get me wrong: I want Obama's bill to pass. I'm unhappy with his health care reform half-measure, but apparently it's the best we're going to do right now, right here. And a half-measure is far better than status quo in 2010. While I resent the distorted message and last-minute pressure being exerted by Obama's panicky, bungling team of political advisors, I understand their desperation. Despite profound advances that President Obama is quietly accomplishing on many issues, a loss on health care reform would make him appear to be a weak leader. A political loser. A charismatic wunderkind who didn't pan out, and whose 2008 election was a mistake. Sadly, the President and his closest advisors have only themselves to blame, because they foolishly overpromised during the campaign, then elevated the much-reviled stimulus bill and health care reform to be the only prominent policy centerpieces of Obama's first year in office. Thanks almost entirely to House Speaker Pelosi's formidable skills, the stimulus bill passed quickly. But the politically nervous Obama administration dithered and frittered away countless opportunities for clever or bold leadership on health care reform, and thus, has been unable to close the deal. The ineptness of the Obama administration in firmly closing the deal on health care reform is illustrated at The Drudge Report today, which lists a litany of 2009 headlines heralding the health care "end game" including: July 28, 2009: Healthcare endgame on Capitol Hill (Reuters) August 21, 2009: Analysis: Health care endgame near but uncertain (AP) October 25, 2009: Senators say health care bill endgame is in sight (Politico) October 30, 2009: Health reform inches closer to endgame (WaPo) November 23, 2009: The Health Care Endgame (NPR) Please, let's get on with passing health care reform. Now. For the sake of 30 million American uninsured men, women and children. And if, by President Obama's false deadline of March 18th, health care reform is still not fait accompli, perhaps it's time to put it aside for another day. Another Congress. Dare I say, maybe even another President. Obama's last-minute shoving may be too much, far too late... Amd after all, our great country has many other pressing issues to attend to, including soaring unemployment and foreclosure rates and two wars. We MUST get back to the business of running the country. Wednesday July 26, 2006 Fabio and his team were exactly what we needed. They are extremely efficient and very professional. They are friendly but waste no time getting down to business, and they don't stop until they are done. They were very careful with all of our belongings; it was fantastic to see how well-packed the inside of the truck was, especially because they packed it so quickly. The next time I move, I wouldn't think of calling anyone but Fabio. Many thanks, guys. You are life-savers. * * * * * Sarah C. Wednesday June 15, 2005 Fabio Moving is A++++++!!!! I have called Fabio twice...the first time for a glass dining set which he delivered to me quickly and safely... and the other was for a loveseat and oversized chair. I didnt have to lift a finger! I forgot to take measurements when I purchased the chair and loveseat...so when the time came to move them in my apartment it turned out they didnt fit! Fabio came up with a quick solution and was COMPLETELY prepared and equiped to take apart my couch and loveseat to get them in. They were put together beautifully!! I would recommend Fabio Moving to anyone who needs something moved efficiently and professionally in a pinch!:) * * * * * Diane F. Tuesday July 29, 2008 I just wanted to thank you and Fabio again. They did an amazing job last night getting the couch into my apartment and around all the corners that come with an old house. The next time I do need to move (which will hopefully not be soon!), I will definitely keep you all in mind. Diane * * * * * Shana D. Saturday August 30, 2008 I am so impressed with this moving company, and I have tried many over the last few years. Jenny is so incredibly courteous and helpful, and Fabio and his attending crew are also very professional. The men he hires to help him are fast, strong, and considerate. When he moved my boyfriend today, they moved a couch from one room to another as a courtesy when we decided we wanted it in another room. I have also had Fabio disassemble a canopy bed in the middle of a move and he managed it beautifully. They are also so great with breakables! When my boyfriend moved, Fabio's truck was completely full, and everything was secured and arrived safely and unbroken. This is a hard-working group of people, and I am amazed at how reasonable they manage to keep their rates, especially compared to other movers in Boston! * * * * * Josephine K. Saturday December 13, 2008 I contacted Fabio's company about moving furniture I purchased from a private party. Jenny was very accommodating and sensitive when I needed to change dates and times. She emailed me with the details of the delivery and was in telephone contact with me to finalize the schedule. Fabio and his staff arrived promptly at the seller's home, in the midst of a rainstorm. They wrapped and secured the furniture and arrived at my home, again, promptly as estimated. The delivery to my second floor was carried out with precision and care. Fabio presented the contract and explained the process. He and his staff were professional, neat, clean, efficient, and very protective of our puchase. Fabio Moves! I will recommend him to family, friends and business associates.
